Camping but not going into Parks??

If we lived closer to the Fort say within an hour or two we would probably go there just to camp but we are too far away (15hrs). We enjoy going to the parks and enjoy where we get to stay (our motorhome) while doing it. I couldn't imagine staying there and not going to the parks.

To me its a package deal the parks with out FW or FW with out the parks just would not be right. We stay longer now so we can spend more time relaxing at FW.

There are daily activities by the Meadows pool area, canoeing, tennis, bike riding, golf carting, horse back riding, the wagon ride, playgrounds, volleyball, the campfire and movie, watching the ducks and squirrels, the beach, shuffleboard...all within FW.

We've stayed at the fort for 5 days and never hit the parks. We enjoy going to Downtown Disney at night and hitting all the other resorts.

I really envy you folks that are able to relax. Seems like just about anywhere we go, we are always running 200MPH be it at FW or a state park. OlderMan said "Isn't that the point of a vacation??" I always need a vacation from the vacation. I only have two kids but, my 4 year old runs me silly. I must be living wrong.

i'd never go in the parks if they'd let me..... darn kids.:rotfl2:

I love the parks, but if your not a fl res they can be expensive....we got to the parks every year....but since Ive found the fort, suddenly Im wanting to go twice a year...and I simply couldnt afford all my kids at the parks twice a year. My Dec trip cost me over 5g with gas and gifts and grub included. Then came Christmas!!! I figure if we make a parkless trip mid way through the year we can at least get a taste of Disney and knock some of our camping craving out. Then, the chance to meet and hang with you deviants pushes it right over the top.

I'm an RVer, NOT a camper, lol !! I need my full hook ups and amenities.

That said, I would not drive 2200 miles roundtrip just to go to FW. It's definitely the best place to stay while checking out WDW. We had a great time last time and are really exciting about our next trip. But we will probably only go every 2-3 years. There are just so many other places we want to see. And the older the kids get, the less excited they get about the character interaction. They want thrill rides !!

We do a lot of camping within 4 hours of home. We will leave on a Thursday and come back on Sunday night. I have so many campgrounds on my list of places to check out that it will take me years to get through them...and those are just the MI ones :lmao:

Last summer we did an almost 3 week trip to South Dakota and had a GREAT time. This year we are going to Panama City Beach with my mom and stepdad, spending a week in Ohio with 4 other families, and then our big trip to FW in the winter. Everything else will just be local.

The summer of '09 we want to take an 8 week trip out west. Wisconsin Dells,Yellowstone, Redwood Forest, Pacific Coast, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, TX, OK and on back towards home.

Shannon, just reading your post made me envious. It must be wonderful to have the time to take these trips. 3 weeks in South Dakota, that must have been great.:) Summer of '09 sounds like a dream vacation.:cloud9:
I look forward to hearing about all your trips, I've decided I shall live vicariously through you!:cutie:

We have gone to FtW and not hit the parks on a couple of visits. In fact even during our longest stay one year (2 weeks around July 4th) we only went into the parks 3 days. The rest of the time we chilled out in the campground or enjoyed other non theme park stuff.

One of the ideas one year was to resort hop since they are all fun just by themselves (especially around Christmas). One of the best is Animal Kingdom Lodge. You can check out the magnificent lobby, the several viewing areas to see the animals out on the Savannah, etc. Believe me there is plenty to do in Disney besides parks.

Oh and don't forget Downtown Disney and Pleasure Island. The Comedy Club is way cool and so is the Adventurer's Club.

Lastly the Kissimmee Orlando area has lots to see and do. Medieval Times, Dolly Parton, etc. All just a short drive from Disney.

Man, where have you been? I haven't seen you post for months.

OK. I went overboard. But my point is, if FW wasn't at WDW many of us wouldn't travel thousands of miles to camp there. I'm also a little upset about the brush clearing they did. It's a little too open now.

BTW my idea of camping is probably a little different than many on the boards. I like state park tent camping so I can bring beer, but back packing and wilderness camping are my true love. It's the military in me.

My backpacking days are over - I am into comfort now. When I retired from the Army, I made a solemn promise to myself that I would never be cold, wet and hungry again.

Now, on to MRE's:

I used to have a case of MRE's in the basement for emergencies, but in a nostalgic binge I finished them off. Burp.

I'm sure an old soldier like ntsammy remembers the transition from C rats to MRE's. I liked the C rats, but they just were hard to carry, and if you didn't have a P38 you were screwed. The first MRE's were TERRIBLE - these dehydrated things that took forever to rehydrate. Some of the MRE's now are pretty good, but a lot of fat and calories.
