Camcorder help!!!

DH and I are looking to get a camcorder. We were going to get the Sony TRV22 but I just saw at my local Best Buy the Sony IP5 on clearance for $799. I really wanted to get the IP5 last year but wasn't willing to pay $1200 for it. Does anyone have either? I am looking for something small and easy to use.

That is a GREAT price on the IP5. A couple of things to be careful of:

Make sure it is complete (battery, charger, all accessories, etc)

If it is an open box item (i.e. a demo unit) I would consider very seriously also purchasing an extended warranty. I know a lot of folks have very mixed feelings on warranties, but here is my .02

I work for an A/V retailer, used to work in the Service Center. Camcorders are such complex pieces of machinery (because of their small size) that if anything does happen to them, the cost of getting them repaired can be astronomical!

Like I said, that is a fantastic price.

It is the demo. It's originally on clearance for $899 but they take an additional $100 off because it's the floor model. Everything is included and I would get the warranty. Have you had any experience with that model?

To me, buying a Sony camera or camcorder is like buying a Honda automobile. Built well, does exactly what it is supposed to, and there are very few surprises. I would not have any qualms about buying it. You may end up replacing the battery sooner than you would have with a brand new out of the box camera, but still with that price, it would be well worth it as well.

I have no direct experience with this particular model, since we are camcorder dinosaurs and are still just 'surviving' with our ordinary 8mm cam. (No hi-8, no Digital 8, just plain ole 8mm).

look very closely at the lens.

look for scratches and look to see of the lens has a consistant look across the surface. Maybe even take a maginfying glass to look with.
