Calling skiers - anyone been to Soldeu, Andorra?

After visiting Boston and Stowe in February we are all now hooked on skiing. Now there's a dilemma - skiing or Disney???

OK I can hear you all screaming at the PC..............!!!

Anyway we have now booked to go to Soldeu in Andorra Feb 06 and are hoping to go back to Disney in 2007, so if anyone has been and has got any good tips/advice would appreciate it.

Now I'll just go away to recover from your disapproving looks

Skiing, skiing, skiing!

Went to Soldeu about 15 years. Can't remember much about it, but it does have a very good ski school, a fairly big ski area and is tax-free so apres-ski entertainment shouldn't be too expensive. I'm sure you'll have a great time there.

Skiing - no competition there (but Florida, not just Disney, comes a very close second!).

Like Rob, went to a resort nr Soldeu 18 years ago. At the time I have to say I wasn't terribly impressed, but my SIL has been this year and loved it so much that they're already booked for next year.

It's a very reasonably priced area to ski in - check out the lift pass, ski school and equipment hire prices compared to other resorts, you should be pleasantly surprised.

Hmmmm . . . . now we're hoping to be off to Stowe, Killington or Loon mountain (I just love that name, it just fits me ) next February, so tell me about your skiing over there! Just got all the brochures in and are meeting with our skiing friends in a couple of weeks to make the decision

Stowe was fab, it was our 1st "attempt" at skiing. The ski instructors were great, very patient!! We were there Mon 14th to Fri 18th Feb (our half term)and had no queues whatsoever so I can't comment on the queues at the weekend but apparently it can get quite busy.

Most of the accommodation is located along the Mountain Road and in Stowe village itself. You most definitely need a car - we stayed at the Golden Eagle Resort and that was about a 10/15 min drive to the slopes. This was a great place to stay - pool, jacuzzi, sauna, free hot chocolate/cookies every afternoon. If you like luxury the Stoweflake Resort looked lovely.

We have 2 kids 11 & 8 so weren't interested in late night apres ski but if you are this wouldn't be the place to be - the restaurants tended to close quite early and there weren't many buzzing bars either. I think Killington is more geared up for the partying skiiers!!

The ski passes/lessons etc were quite expensive but I think you can buy them cheaper online if you prebook.

We booked this trip DIY and managed to bag some bargains (ie Golden Eagle booked on Hotwire for £40 a night)

Courchevel in France. Best resort in the world (in my humble opinion), although I also very fond of Les Arcs in France.

Which ski resort. Now that's a difficult one. For the pure ski enthusiast, you cannot beat the French resorts. I agree with Rob, Courcheval and other resorts in Les Tois Vallee area are very nice, so too the "big" ones like Meribel (one of my real faves), Val d'Isere, Tignes, but smaller places such as La Rosiere (another French favourite) are very nice and interlink with other areas.

Italy is fun because I love ALL things Italian - been to Cervinia, Sestriere and this Xmas Bardonecchia (not so good, wouldn't recommend it ). Cervinia is my fave Italian resort. You can ski over the border into Zermatt, a fabulous ski resort in Switzerland and the views of the Matterhorn are stunning.

Austria and Switzerland are superb for the all-in type of ski holiday, eg skiing, apres skiing - sleigh rides, tubing down the mountains, dog sled races, I could go on.

My personal favourite resort - for all the reasons stated above - is Kitsbuhel. You cannot beat skiing the Hannenkham, one of the most famous ski race circuits in the world
