Calling old timers - Vic & Alb free dinner - real or imagined

Does anyone else remember when a very generous soul from another bb offered to pay for DVC member's dinner at Victoria and Albert's if they joined him on a specific day? We're talking early 90s.

I was recounting the history of DVC and the bbs to my DH the other day when I *remembered* this- of course, now, I think it might not have happened at all and I just think it did....

I am but I don't recall that and I think I'd have remembered it if I did. It wouldn't surprise me if a guide had made that offer in return for getting the sale.

I actually think it was a member - maybe from Texas? He invited everyone that could join him - many people thought it was a scam but then I remember all the thank you posts afterward.

Not sure if this is what you're remembering, but there was a guy from Prodigy (can't remember his name) who offered to pay for V & A for anyone who rode TOT with him. This was during one of the Prodigy Gatherings. We rode with him & the group, but passed on V&A. This was probably late '93 or early '94.

That happened well before the DIS started in '97, but that sort of thing wasn't uncommon in the early days of DVC and the internet. Lots of great Disney events have blossomed as a result of those early internet groups like Prodigy, AOL and RADP - followed closely by the good early days of wdw4adults and then the DIS. Mousefest was a continuation of the early RADP meets every December at WDW, but many of those early groups had lots of events and this was a really unique event provided by an individual who was very appreciative of his DVC purchase and internet friends.

Boy, it all comes flooding back now...many things have changed and many are still the same here on the big WWW.

geez, that was eons ago.....

remember when RADP was "it" for gleaning info? with the others being somewhat spin-offs, where info would trickle down to (yup, before lime green mickey heads, there were RADP buttons).

every so often, i'm tempted to change my current user name to the (more whimsical) RADP one

I still have a RADP pin (three @'s) , given to me by Deb Wills years ago at one of the RADP meets. I was also at the "Toad-In" - protesting the closing of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. There were about 50 of us who rode Toad continuously for about 4 hours. Over the last couple of hours, Disney was apparently expecting some some of action by the group and a large contingency of security and "suits" gathered outside. During the final hour a number of these CMs went into the ride and tried to "hide" behind the cutouts in the attraction - which was pretty funny, since the ride was done in blacklight and all of these CMs were wearing white shirts that glowed in the dark. Nothing ever happened - everyone posed for for group photos and a few had made protest signs. It was a rainy afternoon, but was actually fun. Everyone just got back in line after each ride until they finally closed down the line for the last time so they could use that space for "Pooh".

RADP had lots of problems since it was not moderated and attracted lots of activity from those interested in disrupting discussion. This ultimately led to the creation of the sites that followed like Rita Aero's wdw4adults and later the DIS and may others. There also are still several newsgroup style Disney sites - but none currently have the charm and comraderie of the early days of RADP.

I kind of liked the old newsgroup days, it was sort of wild west frontier democracy. I remember voting for the r.a.d split into the radp, misc, animation, news (I think) newsgroups. The internet was somehow more mysterious through a unix shell account.
