Hi, I workin a large school and we r very lucky to have a fabulous staff. We like to have a weekend away each year as its always seems to be someone's special birthday. This April 24 of us went to Edinburgh for. A 40th and 60th ! Nownext year it's actually my 40th and we have started our planning. There are 3 cities we've never been to - Birmingham, Glasg:wave2:ow and Sheffield . We love shopping, nice wine bars and a bit of a boogy ( preferably 80's music lol) is there any dissers who live or have been to any of these? Where are the main shops? Best areas for hotels / bars etc & importantly what's it like for a night out?
Thank you for you help , as I'm a Wdw fantatic I love to plan lol. X

Well I'm in Glasgow and for a start can say that our shopping is much better than in Edinburgh, and that's not just my own bias! If you're looking at Glasgow then everything you have mentioned is in the City Centre, including lots of hotels slap bang in the centre.

Loads of wine bars but I personally love an area called "Merchant City", lots of lovely bars and restaurants and most at a reasonable price as well. We also have one of the Reflex 80s bars and I think there's another similar but I haven't been to either so can't really comment.

There's also the West End and a place called Ashton Lane which is lovely but both, especially Ashton Lane, are alot pricier than the City Centre. The West End is only a short subway ride away and it is quite a nice area for bars, restaurants, etc.

Anything else Glasgow related and I'll try my best to help :goodvibes

Some info on Sheffield (I worked there for over 20 years) - there is plenty of shopping with the usual suspects such as M&S, John Lewis, Debenhams and lots of other shops.

Plenty of cafes (both chain and individually owned) as well as restaurants. These can be found in and around the main shopping area in the centre. The Crucible and Lyceum theatres are also in the centre and again, plenty of nightlife and eateries nearby.

West Street is a good run of bars and eateries, with Division Street running parallel to it, heading from the centre towards the University and West One where there is a vodka revolution and rib shack.

Plenty of hotels in the centre, such as Novotel, Mercure, Travel Lodge etc.

Meadowhall shopping complex is a short tram or bus ride away - lots of lodges near here as well as the Arena is also in this area.

Out of Sheffield, Ecclesall road is a popular place for a night out with bespoke cafes and delis as well as a few of the normal chain places.

Enjoy your night out wherever you decide to go :) and ask if I can answer anything else.

No info on any of the afor mentioned places just thought I'd wish you a VERY early "Happy Birthday Helen" :lovestruc:lovestruc:wave2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

Thankyou Izzi and all.

It is really great info and I now have a starting point to go and research .
Must admit I quite fancy Glasgow but will have to see what the others say.

Birmingham info for you! Lots of fab shopping, Birmingham has regenerated so much in the last 5 years. There's the Bullring (with Selfridges, big Debenhams, Next etc) and the Mailbox (with more designer type shops). The road that runs between the two has every other shop you need. It's quite compact from that point of view.

Hotel wise you could pick anything needed to suit your budget. Most the nightclubs and bars are around Broad Street and the Canal Basin, there's also plenty of hotels here.

Having been to Glasgow and Edinburgh I have to say that they're more interesting as they also have heritage and are prettier! Birmingham is a bit lacking from that point of view.

Come to Glasgow. Its an amazing place with so many things to do and sites to see. If you have the time then you can vist all sorts of places just outside of Glasgow like Loch Lomond. I am not sure how long you are planning on staying for but thats just an idea.

Oh and the merchant city is a fabulous place for eatting and drinking with lots of variety.
