Calling anyone that has sailed out of New York on DCL

Hi we dialed out of NY for the member cruise on the Magic in 2016. I flew into Newark, and stayed at the Hilton right at the airport. The hotel was fine, as we arrived about 930pm, and just wanted a clean room. We had drinks and a snack in the lounge and breakfast the following morning, and it was up to the usual Hilton standards. I arranged for a car service from the hotel, and it took us less than an hour to get to the port. I think we left the hotel about 9 or 930, and made a stop to pick up some champagne. I am not sure how many people are traveling with you, but remember that hotels near the city are going to probably be smaller than what you are used to. I agree with everyone's advice about NYC, there seemed to be plenty of cars picking folks up after the cruise. The only thing to keep in mind is if you are returning on a weekday, you will probably hit traffic going back into the city. I’m from New Jersey I stayed in a hotel one night in nyc. It was a days inn I think it was back in the 90’s. The room was a lot smaller than a cruise ship room. Taking a shower half my body was in the shower the other half was out of the shower. It’s Manhattan hotels will be expensive but don’t try to go to cheap unless you want a room the size of a closet.

Don't take Super Shuttle. Unless you want your trip to take 3 hours and have the last person be dropped off right where you started. It's not a cost savings either for a group of more that one. Uber and Lyft both have pool options I think if you're really looking to save a few bucks. But I agree with the PP who suggested taking NJ transit from Newark if you don't have a lot of luggage, that can save you money and time unless you're traveling at an off hour.

Our favorite NYC hotel is the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Rooms are lovely, nice lounge and great location for theatre and sightseeing.

You can uber/lyft/cab from Newark Airport to downtown Jersey City and stay at Hyatt Regency in Jersey City. There is a train option as well to get to the hotel, but it's several steps and not a one seat ride. The Hyatt in Jersey City, NJ is located on the waterfront with amazing NYC views. You could possibly even see the ship returning to port in the early morning from your hotel with One World Trade Center in the background. Next to the hotel is a ferry terminal that will take you to midtown and about half a mile south of the cruise ship terminal. Shorter walk then from midtown hotels like Doubletree. There's a walking path or cab pickup if you want to take a cab to the cruise ship terminal. There's a PATH train station next to the Hyatt hotel as well that can get you into downtown NYC in 5 minutes for sightseeing before if you have time. You can also take a ferry to downtown NYC as well from next to the hotel. Paulus Hook is the ferry stop. www.nywaterway.com

I believe it would be port side. We were starboard side and see Lady Liberty on our way out of the port.

Thanks. I switched my WBTA room to a port side verandah, gave up my Navigator's Verandah on starboard side, but besides the Statute of Liberty, from what I read the port side get more sun on a WBTA. We have done 2 other WBTA and were port side, never paid much attention, but didn't want to have a dark room the whole way.

Yes, Port side to see Statue of Liberty coming IN to NYC, and city skyline going OUT of NYC. Starboard for the reverse — Statue of Liberty going OUT of NYC, and N.Y. skyline coming back in.

Keep in mind the ships usually come in really early, we’re usually in port by the time we wake up! (We always book late seating, so we have late breakfast the last day, and can sleep a little later.)

I hope to get up in time to see us sail into NYC past the Statue of Liberty, but looks like I will have to go up on deck to see the city and the SOL. When we did the Pacific Coast cruise I got up to go on deck when we sailed under the Golden Gate Bridge and it was pretty awesome.

DW and I sailed out of New York in October 2016. We flew into JFK and got into the long taxi line at the airport. The fare to Manhattan from JFK is fixed. So that made it a no brainer for us.



We stayed one night at the Residence Inn New York Manhattan / Central Park. When we checked in I ask for a room with a view of the pier because we were boarding the Disney Magic in the morning. I guess everyone wants a park view because we got a room with a view of Times Square and also pier 88. The next morning I woke up and there she was, the Disney Magic was jus waiting for us to get our butts down there to sail away. We could have walked there from the hotel but with all the luggage and having to cross the last street using a pedestrian bridge—a taxi made much more sense.



Here is my notes for Pier 88:

Manhattan pier 88 west side. 711 12th Ave New York, NY 10019

Use 711 12th Avenue @ 55th Street (pier 90) car entrance for 88/90/92. Walking use 12th Avenue @ 48th Street.

At the end of the cruise we took a cab to the Courtyard NY Manhattan/ Herald Square by Macy’s. We saw 3 Broadway plays many Apple Stores, Live with Kelly and did lots of shopping. Almost like Disneyland but not quite.


After over spending our welcome (I mean money) in Manhattan, our bell man, Michael was able to book a private car to JFK for us. The taxi fare back to the airports are not fixed so this was also a no brainer.


We had a great time except for the part where we ended up in Sydney Nova Scotia instead of Walt Disney World thanks to Matthew the Hurricane.


PS: Shortly before we sailed Disney offered by email great prices on tickets to The Lion King Show. I already had tickets to another show so I was not able to take advantage of this offer.

We are sailing out of New York again in July (not on DCL). We also do quite a few Broadway weekends in NY. My favorite hotel for the past few years has been the Casablanca. It great little boutique hotel right off Times Square.

We try to do something a bit different each trip. This trip we will be seeing Mean Girls and Carousel. We also booked a Hell's Kitchen Walking Food Tour through Manhattan Walking Tours. This will be our 4th time touring with them. Their guides are fantastic.

Mean Girls is SO FUN. I saw it in April, and I've been listening to the cast album steadily since it came out a few weeks ago. I hope you enjoy it! (FWIW I liked Mean Girls much better than Frozen. For Disney shows, I recommend Lion King over everything, but I still miss Newsies something fierce. For all-ages shows, I recommend School of Rock.)

If you like sweets, I recommend Sugartooth Tours. They have several offerings. I did "Find Heaven in Hell's Kitchen."

I usually stay at the Sheraton Times Square, which is on 7th and 53rd between Times Square and Central Park. It's a great location for proximity to Broadway shows while being out of the immediate chaos of Times Square. I also like to spend at least 1/2 a day wandering Central Park, so it's a perfect location for my interests. The best place for you to stay really depends on what you want to do.

On DCL? It was 45 pp OW last year. They will not go to EWR.

we just booked for oct 2019 and all the starboard rooms were gone so I assume that is the best side. But can not really figure out the difference since I assume we will be on the party deck on the way out and asleep on the way in. Funny how these things go. Agree on no good airports, just go with the cheapest flight and expect to pay a lot for a cab
