Just had to chime in here I'm ususally just on the scraping boards. But I was born in Va Beach (yes my dad was in the Navy) Grew up mostly in No.Va. and now by marriage I'm stuck in Maryland just over the river. (I usually don't admit that)

Va Beach is like heaven on earth! Just that whole area Newport News, Cheaspeak, Portsmouth is amazing. My brother moved back after college and every chance I get I go. It is so relaxing and you feel so safe and american being surrounded by all the bases. I love the hustle and bustle of the beltway but hubby and I have already decide we will retire in Va Beach. (30 years from now). Plus the cost of living is sooooo much cheaper down there.

Right now the trend around here is to retire in Williamsburg. Especially with all my dads Navy friends. Grandparents love being near theme parks!

If you do have kids, you do want to look in the different County school systems. There is a huge differences between them.
Thank you, Julianne! You make me want to go back right now!! So it's not just me...and my friend...that like it sooooooooooooooo much! And he tells me you can still make a decent dollar in that area. :) I have been back in FL a week now, and it still doesn't feel right! Usually by this time I'm back in the swing of "being home." I don't feel like it's home. I'm not sure exactly why. I would love to pack up the house and move NOW! And it's good to hear that it's cheaper than Northern VA. Geeez...dinner alone is cheaper than FL! The area I'm in is expensive...beautiful area which was why I stayed here...but expensive! Today I e-mailed my son's Godfather who is a realtor. :) I wonder how long it would take for my place to sell. The market has been GREAT for sellers down here. Right now I'm planning on staying here the 4 months coming up and taking 3 classes at school. We'll see what happens!! :)

The Jefferson is beautiful. DD and I enjoyed Sunday Tea there one afternoon when she lived in Richmond. I thought the sraircase in Gone with the Wind was modeled after the one in the Jefferson.
Sunday Tea! That sounds like fun. :)

Do you get much snow in that area?

There isn't a lot of snow around here. Every few years we get a freak snow storm. LOL the funny thing is everything gets shut down at the hint of snow and there is a major rush at the grocery stores.

Sounds GREAT, Pooh Girl! Common sense! Unlike when I lived in NJ and it took me 2 hours to get to work in the snow for what was normally a half hour ride to go 6 miles! Just shut it down!! :teeth:

I'm ready to pack my bags, I'm ready to pack my bags!!!!! :) :Pinkbounc

lol you need to STOP, Va just isnt that good

I'm bored with the FL sunshine. I'm here 15 years this month! :earseek: :earseek: And there's NO military guys in my town. :( There are PLENTY there. ;)

I just e-mailed back DS's Godfather...the realtor! Guess I must be serious if I'm e-mailing him! :earseek: :earseek: :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

Okay...I have now found the company I want to work for! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc Northrop Grumman! My last job before moving to FL was for a company that did guidance and navigation systems for military aircraft. I LOVED that company and was sorry to leave! This company definitely has my attention! I want to move tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

County school systems, Julianne? Looking at this alone, there seems to be a huge difference in towns! I wonder why Poquoson seems to be ahead of the others and more consistent in scores across the board!

Hmmm...Poquoson...Great schools and flood zone.

Newport News...not so hot scores and not a flood zone.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Keep in mind that Poquoson only has one school per level and Newport News has many schools to get that average. Just one bad school can make the grade drop considerably and I know from experience NN has alot of bad schools.

Poquoson is kind of a small town and we love our schools. The town is very supportive of the schools and parents are very involved. Most of the teachers love to teach there, and it really shows. But it is still in a flood zone.:)

Thanks, Linda! I actually miss being in a small town. I grew up in a small town in New Jersey...Pompton Plains. It was great. You could walk to everything from where we lived. And I'm having trouble with the word Poquoson! It's more difficult than where I went to high school...Pequannock Twsp. H.S. ;)

Poquoson is pronounced Puh-ko-son

My DH grew up down that way. Well, actually all over that area: Middlesex, Deltaville, Poquoson. He loved it.

Heres a vote for the Kempsville School District in Va Beach. I too grew up in a Navy family and my dad made it his goal that I go to school in that district. They were very college bound oriented. I would say that over 80% of my graduating class went on to college. If my husband could get a job there I would move back in a heartbeat.

Wow! Hampton Roads must be a really great area. I've seen a few people say they would go back! :teeth:

I agree Cindy, Va Beach has some really good schools too if you like living on that side of the water. BTW, is it like NN schools where you might have a really good middle school in your zone, but then the high school is REALLY bad? They have a terrible problem here with bussing the kids halfway across town to make things *equal*. I might one day be interested in venturing to that side of the water if I can ever get the courage to deal with all those different streets  As it stands, I can get to the Naval Base ok, but don't dare venture any further ;)
