I want to make jello salad for Christmas, but my motherinlaw's has weird directions!

Looking for an orange one. Has orange jello, cool whip, mini marshmallows, I think crushed pineapple and or mandarin oranges. Something like that.

My MIL's has cottage cheese and you sprinkle the dry jello over the fruit and let it set, then mix in cottage cheese and cool whip. That doesn't sound right, lol!

Fire away with the recipes!!

This one?

MANDARIN ORANGE SALAD
1 (3 oz.) orange Jello
1 c. water, hot
1 (8 oz.) Cool Whip
1 c. orange juice
30 oz. mandarin oranges, drained
Marshmallows, optional

dissolve Jello in 1 cup hot water. Stir until all granules are dissolved. Add one cup of orange juice. Mix well. Pour in refrigerator until Jello starts to set. Then stir in Cool Whip, mandarin oranges and marshmallows, if so desired. Refrigerate until set.

This is the one we make in our family, not with mini marshmallows, but with marshmallow creme

2 small boxes orange jello - 1 1/2 cups boiling water
8 oz cream cheese (bring to room temperature)
1/2 cup marshmallow crème disagreement on recipe between 2 sister in laws..1 uses mini marshmallow, 1 uses crème, so take your pick, lol
1/2 cup sugar
dash of salt
8 oz cool whip
1 can mandarin oranges, (drain the juice), and chop oranges
1 can crushed pineapple (with juice)
Mix jello , water and marshmallow, refrigerate till it starts to thicken
Mix cream cheese, sugar, and salt till creamy
Mix with jello, then mix with cool whip, then stir in the fruit
Sometimes we use a mold, but usually just serve it in a big bowl

If you think there is too much fruit, just put in what you want, and keep the other to just eat plain!

Ack! Trying to get AWAY from the cottage cheese, lol! That's the part that icked me out with my MIL's, lol!

So generally, it looks like make jello with less water, let partially set, mix in cool whip, set a but and add "stuff". Yes?

That sounds about right. I add all of my ingredients at the same time I add the Cool Whip.

Are you trying to make a mold or a salad served in a bowl? Usually you sprinkle the gelatin over the liquid to stop clumping when you try to dissolve it. I guess sprinkling it on the fruit would do that when it macerates (no sugar free jello, obviously), but you'd have to let it sit for awhile. My grandma always used sour cream or cottage cheese with jello. It's not as sweet as Cool Whip, and everything else in the recipe sounds like sweet on sweet on sweet. My grandma made molds, sour cream molds better than cottage cheese.
