A few years ago, we had planned a trip to CA, and you all helped me out. All the plans changed and we ended up in San Francisco and on a cruise to HI!

I'm starting over..and am hoping for the same type of help from you CA people (mostly because I didn't save anything, and I can't find it in search).

Here's the plan so far (hope you can stay with me..I'm all over the place):

We will be leaving upstate NY and arriving in Los Angeles Jan 26th noon time (with another couple). We would like to do some site seeing in the LA area and we need a hotel for the night near the dock (San Pedro I've been told). I'm spoiled by Florida, where several reasonably priced hotels with shuttles from the airport and to the pier where we leave on cruises. Looks like here, I may have to take a cab or supershuttle to a hotel, and a cab to the dock. I don't know if we will have enough time to check in, and then either look for a bus tour, or rent a car and go up to Universal Studios. We have the entire day, once we land. Is Universal open late (not so interested in rides, but I am the actual workign studios)? Would we be better to just stick with tours like Hollywood, or what?

The next day we leave for an 8 day cruise on Norwegian. When we return, we'd have that day for further siteseeing..again, we need a hotel, and a tour bus, or a rental car. Our friends are leaving the morning after we return, but we have some extra days..we'd like to go to either DisneyLand, or if we didn't make if before, up to Universal Studios. Or maybe both, just so we can finally say we've been to DisneyLand.

If we spend the return night in LA area, we would leave the next morning for somewhere, Universal or Disneyland. So we would need a hotel in one of those areas (when we originally were coming, we had decided between Howard Johnson or Candy something or other within walking distance of Disney).

I've found several that are about $150-200 a night for the precruise. I'm not that fancy, and while I want clean, fancy doesn't matter. But shuttles either from the airport or to the pier would sweeten the deal.

So, say you've been in this area, in this predicament..what would you suggest? I am so out of my league in Califronia.

If you are still with me..thanks. If you have suggestions, I'm open to them all.

First of all, the 8 night cruise on NCL is fabulous!:thumbsup2 My family did it two years ago for Christmas and it was really nice. The ship is gorgeous and the dining options are wonderful. We also found the crew to be highly attentive and the ports to be delightful (we had a slightly altered itinerary, that didn't include Ixtapa/Acapulco, both of which I've heard are even better).

San Pedro is about 40 minutes from LAX, so you probably won't find a hotel with a shuttle to the pier and the airport (and if you do find one with a shuttle to both, let me know...:) ) There are a few hotels near the pier (a Marriott and a Doubletree, among others, I believe), but from what I've seen they are expensive. I think they may have shuttles, but I'm not sure. We are doing a cruise out of San Pedro in Dec. and we will probably stay near LAX (hotels with shuttles and sometimes breakfast for under $100) and then take a cab to the port (should be under $50, including tip, depending on traffic). There is public transit that gets you from LAX to the port for a low price, but it is not easy with luggage (at least 2 transfers) and takes a long time.

Let me know if you want any more information and I will do my best to help out. I'm not an expert on the area, but I've done the LAX-San Pedro trek a few times
