California shore fishing rod and reel?

I'm the owner of a shiny new fishing license, and would like to fish from shore while camping (in Bodega Dunes, if you're wondering). What kind of rod and reel should I get? I'm looking for something suitable, not great. Pretend you're recommending it for your irresponsible teenage nephew who might lose it.
