California Grill for the unsophisticated palate?

I have reservations for the California Grill in Sept. but I am not sure if I should keep them. My husband is a picky eater and is not a big fan of fancy food. He is more of a hamburger and fries kind of guy. I have looked around on the boards and it looks like they always have the steak which he would eat but I am not sure if there would be an appetizer that he would like. He does not like seafood, hardly any veggies besides potatoes, or chicken. I have looked at the cheese selection and I am not sure that he would like that either (the accompaniments would throw him off). We have the free dining and I really don't want to waste 2 TS on a meal that he would hate. Has anyone else had any experience eating there with an extremely picky eater?

Would he enjoy the 4 cheese flatbread as an appetizer? It's like a very, very good cheese pizza.:goodvibes

Another thought is to pay out of pocket for that meal. That way he could just order the steak.

CG is sooo good. I would try not to miss it.

You say that your DH is a picky eater, but are you as well? Blowing 2 TS per person when you aren't really going to experience all the interesting dishes would be a waste of money/credits. Are you only going to CG for the view? The view is great, but there are plenty of great views of the fireworks around the world that are free.

Have you looked at the menu for Narcoossee's? It has a view of the fireworks and has "plainer" food than CG. We have eaten there during our last three trips and had wonderful service and food.

prncess674, I enjoy all types of cuisine and would eat anything I have seen posted for CG (except sushi--just not my thing).

OKWMom, I just made my reservation at the end of last week. Due to the free dining there were not many choices available. The CM said that for the time slot I was looking at (5:00-7:00) all she had available at the Grand Floridian or Contemporary was CG. At the time, I thought it sounded like a good idea. Now I am having second thoughts.

My boyfriend likes very basic food items, hamburgers, mac-n-cheese etc. I took him to CG as a treat and he loved it. We ordered the 4 cheese flatbread which was amazing and my boyfriend ordered the steak. He ate every last bite and stated it was the best he's ever had. I had the red snapper which was excellent as well but I also have a more exotic pallet than he. Here are some pictures:

The 4 cheese flatbread has a pesto drizzle on it which compliments it very nicely

I would highly recommend eating there, we scheduled our meal during the fireworks and it was quite romantic.

Boy, are you sure you aren't married to my son? He ate at Cali Grill once and his main complaint was that it was too "fru-fru food" for him.

I'm also a "plain food" type eater, but I really liked CG. I didn't think I would, but I did!

I had the goat-cheese ravioli for appetizer and the pork tenderloin for my entree. Both were so good, DH got the recipes from a Disney cookbook and has made them again at home!

I agree with one of the other posters. Pay out of pocket for the meal and save your 2TS meals. Order a flat bread appetizer to split. Have DH order a "plain" entree and you order whatever looks good. If you are still hungry order a dessert to split. If you want to stick around for fireworks then head to the bar for a drink then step out onto the observation deck (with cocktails, of course) and enjoy the show. CG isn't that expensive, especially if you follow the above plan!

I'm not huge fan of CG, I've never found the food to be particularly inventive but it is good quality food. That being said members of my family who have "plainer" tastes did not like the food all that much, though I tried all the food and thought it was pretty good.
If you could find a different place maybe that would suit his tastes better, but I think theres probably enough there to find something that he likes. If nothing else he could make a special request to switch a side or something like that and they should be very willing to help.
