No word on the state though. I've been putting this off for a long time and just go my tax preparation software. However, I had a look and my return would seem to be really simple. The standard deduction is more than my mortgage interest deduction and I don't have anything else that I would itemize (especially with the SALT limit). It might be worth itemizing though. I'll need to see.

I can't really imagine the state not following suit. One needs to have a federal return prepared in order to file a state return. In any case, I'm looking at it and I can't imagine owing any taxes, so theoretically I could be late anyways as there's no penalty as long as one is due a refund.

You probably want to put in all your deductions. You hit the federal limit pretty quickly but once I put in all my deductions in excess of the federal limits I ended up with a rebate from CA. I would have had to pay had I just stopped at the Fed limit.

Still waiting for a legitimate reason for the tax deadline to be moved from April to October - let alone now November. "Declared emergency" - yeah, OK, only I'll give you a nice shiny nickel if you can tell me just what that emergency was in your county. Guessing it has a lot more to do with the antiquated computer system that the IRS runs on.

The rationale was an extension for any county that had a federally declared emergency during the winter storms. There was some extensive flooding in my county but honestly it didn't really affect me. I didn't necessarily buy it, but that was the legal requirement to provide the extension. That was 55 out of 58 counties. It's my understanding that two of those counties were approved for an August 16 extension, and the other county simply hadn't requested assistance or there was no disaster declared for that county.

I was caught off guard about the first extension. Called my CPA to ask a question and his secretary says he is swamped. Not sure what the extension is going to do, but I don't need a return call for a couple of weeks. I sure don't remember an extension when we had major flooding in 1986. My county is on the list, but I had a huge refund coming so I filed as soon as I could, and the money is long ago spent.

so glad not to be dealing with this anymore.
