Have you ever made these? I see them all over Pinterest and such but have never made them.

Now that Thanksgiving is done and over, I'm in the planning stages of what to make for my house for Christmas apps/desserts and what to make to bring to my brother's Christmas Eve.

I also make Magic Bars for my brother's house (wouldn't be Christmas without them) so I was thinking of making a couple more cookies/bars and making a cookie tray.

Just curious if they really taste like cookies are do you taste more "cake". What about the texture? Any pros/cons?

I personally don't like the texture of these. They are always so soft and lack the crispy edges/dense middle that I like in cookies.

I make them for the grand kids fairly often.
We get the cake mixes off the clearance rack.....add M&Ms or some flavor chips.
They like them a lot

I haven't, but I did make doughnuts using cake mix and pumpkin. These terrible kids of mine kept eating them all!!! I had to hide a few for DH and myself! I highly recommend!!!

I'm personally not a fan of the cake mix cookies, other than using them for Ooey Gooey Butter cookies. It is a matter of personal preference, though. Easy to try and see if you like them. :)

They are soft, sweet and super versatile. Yellow cake mix, sprinkles and white chocolate chips = birthday cake. Devils food cake mix, creme de menthe chips=andes mints. Spice cake, pecans, butterscotch chips = fall treat. I make bars instead of cookies, so the prep is even faster.

Yes. Even Crumbl cookies is in on the 'trend'. They come out softer than one would expect.

Not a huge fan here, my kids prefer to make cookies from scratch. But, I've made a couple batches of cake mix cookies. They taste fine--you get about 2-3 dozen cookies (plenty for some households--last 5 minutes in ours). You can gussy them up with frosting, sprinkles, etc. They're not a bad quick option--better, certainly, than break and bake cookies, but not as good as homemade, that you can make in a wide assortment of "styles".

Yes I like soft but they were too soft for me.

You can make them crispier. Instead of dropping or rolling them into balls, flatten them a little on the cookie sheet. Also you can pull them out of the oven a couple minutes early, and DROP the tray on the counter a couple of times to flatten the cookies.

Put back in the oven and bake another couple of minutes.

Alternately you can flatten them with a spatula then bake another couple of minutes.

I use the dark chocolate cake mix to make cookies. The recipe used to be on the side of the box. You use slightly different ingredients compared to making a cake, makes the texture more like a cookie then a cake and come out really good.

Yes - We make lemon ones every year.
My MIL made these when my DH was a boy and now we make them. She always called them Lemon Whippersnappers.
My suggestion for these is to not make them to big and do not overbake them - the softer the better.

I am baking some to take to a cookie exchange in a couple of weeks. I did a trial run because I wanted to make sure they were good. And, they are! I found the recipe for these Peppermint Oreo Cookies on Pinterest. Recipe includes white cake mix, egg, cream cheese, butter, vanilla and peppermint extracts, Andes Peppermint Crunch baking chips, crushed Oreos and dark chocolate chips. All of those ingredients appeal to me so I thought, “why not?”

Anyway, they are very good, so I am making them for the cookie exchange.

Interesting! I only did the "side of the box" recipe. Which was fine, just un-exciting. Whereas the Peppermint Oreo ones sound really good! My DS16 would probably make something similar from scratch--not knocking you for starting with a cake mix, it's more how he rolls. Ask me about his "Soon-to-be World Famous Double-Chocolate cookies!" (actually from a Hershey's recipe card collection I got him, but wildly popular with his Boy Scout troop)

Yes, it's not like one makes up cake batter and makes the cookies. The ingredients are slightly altered to add more firmness & texture.

Wow! Those really do sound great. 🥰 I'm the OP of the Cake Mix Cookies thread @lynxstch linked to. I keep meaning to add more cookie recipes as Pinterest has exploded with them. The time as come. I will definitely be adding this recipe to the thread. Thanks! :thumbsup2

The thread also has recipes for cookie bars & pops. And a link to gluten free cake mixes.
