I was just wondering...has anyone here taken the cake decorating classes offered at Michael's or another craft store? I think it's Wilton cake decorating...

I'm thinking about taking the classes, but was curious about upfront costs...

I took a class a local community college. We went once a weeknight for 4 weeks. The only upfront costs were for the piping bags, the decorating tips (our instructor had a list of the ones she wanted us to buy), and the fee (I think it was like $25, but that was 11 years ago when I took the class). She had us bring in a cake pan to practice decorating on it.

It was a lot of fun.:) Good luck, Brandie.:)

I just took one from the community college as well. It was a lot of fun, but it was hard too. I think I paid about $50 for a 4 week (once a week) class. It included most of the supplies, including tips and bags. I had to bring cake, frosting and a few other small things. I had been wanting to take one for a long time and finally did it. You should do it, it will be fun.

Yes! I took the classes at Michaels in September 2002. They are wonderful! Well worth the money. When I took them, they also had a buy one get one free-- so if you can find someone to take them, perhaps you could get them 1/2 off. To take the Wilton class, they don't require you to get the entire kit-- but I would get the beginner kit. You can also snag that with the 40% off coupon. They teach you how to use all sorts of tips and give you tips on frosting and cake baking. If you have any other specific questions-- please feel free to email me! I loved the classes. Be careful though-- it is easy to gain weight!!!! All those cakes you have to decorate...

good luck!

my mom took the Wilton classes YEARS ago (20+ most likely - I know I was just a kid) at JCPenny.

And can I tell you? We always had the BEST birthday cakes!

She still makes BEAUTIFUL cakes too...just takes her a bit longer...her hands aren't as nimble as they once were.

Who cares about the upfront costs - they'll be minimal to all the money you'll save not having to BUY a birthday cake! heheh

thanks for the replies!!

i've been looking into this class for awhile now, but just haven't made the committment! my mom and dad used to decorate cakes too and they were always pretty cool!

and stinkerbelle, that's exactly why i'm thinking about taking them! i've seen what my friends spend on birthday cakes...and let me just say

i think i'm gonna take the cake decorating classes! :Pinkbounc :bounce:
