Cabins or 2 rooms at POP

We are thinking about taking a trip with our family of 5 (two parents and 3 young adult sons). I am trying to decide which is better. They are the same price in January. We have stayed at POP before the skyliner and enjoyed it. I don’t know anything about the cabins.

There’s actually more than one WDW resort with “cabins,” but from context I think it’s the Fort Wilderness cabins you’re talking about?

That’s definitely a very different place to stay versus Pop, especially in terms of transportation. Unless you’re really sold on FW or want a quieter, more private atmosphere, Pop makes it much easier to get around.

Yes, it was Fort Wilderness cabins I was thinking about. Staying with a family of 5 has always been tough, but this will be the first time we have stayed since we couldn’t use POR with the youngest in the trundle bed. It makes it so much more expensive I’m wondering if a Disney trip is even worth it. I really want to stay onsite, but may end up going to one of the Disney Springs hotels or Shades of Green If we go at all. The thought of not staying at a Disney resort makes the trip less exciting.

I'd probably go with Pop because of the skyliner and because I don't find the idea of staying in a cabin at Disney that appealing. (Our other vacation is going to a real cabin in the real wilderness so your opinion may differ.)
As a family of 5, we enjoyed the suites at AoA, but those are probably just as expensive if not a bit more than the two rooms at Pop, and Pop will give you an extra sleeping surface.

I'd love to try the cabins but we are a family of 5 and would never make it out the door or back in/to bed in any sort of reasonable time with one bathroom. Since you said your kids are young adults, I'd go with 2 rooms at Pop. The Skyline is amazing!

The Ft. Wilderness cabins have 1 bathroom. There will be 2 bathrooms if you go with POP. I always advocate for more bathrooms.

Would you use the kitchen in the cabin? Will you let the "kids" travel on their own? Are you driving? Do you eat at your resort's restaurant?

I have stayed in both -
Pros for the Cabins
separate sleeping areas of sorts - back bedroom has a bunk bed and a double bed with the front living area a sofa bed - so everyone will have a separate sleeping area.
full kitchen
Boat to MK
Quiet
Cons for the cabin
If you are planning on using the food court - then the cabins will be a no go - even the refill drink machine will be a hike
Must use Disney transportation just to get around the resort unless you plan on renting a golf cart
Pros for POP
smallish resort with the use of skyliner is a real perk
food court with refill drink machine close by
Cons for POP
Either the young adults will have to split between the 2 rooms or not everyone will have their own sleeping areas

As a total disclaimer - I always rent a car and drive to every park since theme park parking is free for resort guests. Except for when I stay at POP, I will take the skyliner to the Studios and Epcot. I totally dislike Disney bus transportation. I am too impatient. Also when I stay at the cabins I will rent a golf cart to get around Fort Wilderness and down to the boat.

I usually do book POP over the cabins, for the cost factor. But the cabins are really nice for the space and being able to spread out.

Having just stayed in a cabin, it's probably worth noting the pullout sofa bed is up there with the worst I've slept on.

POP is 4 real queen beds and TWO bathrooms. A regular resort that has food court and pools in easy walking distance with minutes access to 3 other resorts dining, walking or via SkyLiner. Transportation is a SkyLiner or one bus.

Cabin is 1 real queen bed, 2 bunks and a sofa fold out bed and ONE bathroom. No easy walk anywhere. It is a legit campground, not a resort feel you get with the hotels. Transportation is a bus then boat to MK or a bus then bus to all other parks and a bus just to get around campground.

I have stayed campground, my older adult kids would vote down in returning as they want a resort/hotel with amenities close by.

I love Fort Wilderness, and the cabins are great. With that said, I would totally do two rooms at Pop for the two bathrooms.

We have done the cabins 3 times in the past few years. Each time, we rented a golf cart which made the experience wonderful. We did not do a park on each of those stays, so that should be factored in. You can park your golf cart near the boat dock which makes it a breeze (no bus or walking required).

At night, the resort really pops with many guests having their campsite full of decorations and lights. It's even more spectacular during the Halloween and Christmas holidays.

It was only 2 of us in the cabins, so it worked out very well space wise, but with 5 it will likely feel a little cramped at times. There is a deck and full-sized picnic table which can help with spacing. Each site also has a grill if that is something you want to use.

Additionally, there are comfort stations throughout the campground (some are pretty close to the cabins). They are restrooms and showers that are incredibly clean.

Pop is great, we loved it pre-Skyliner (4 stays) but eventually became too expensive for us after the Skyliner was built. We now stay at one of the All Stars, usually Music. If you are not set on the Skyliner comparable rooms are about $50 less expensive per night on average. The rooms are identical to Pop and very recently refurbished. I was there a few weeks ago and had a great stay. They also have the family suites which gives you a closed bedroom, 3 queens, 2 bathrooms and a small kitchenette with a full size fridge. When the 2 beds in the main room are not in use they become a table and sofa so you get a place to sit and watch tv and eat. These suites are in the preferred buildings so you are guaranteed a closer location to the food court and busses. They are significantly less expensive than the suites at AOA and, like the cabin, your family would all be together.

My vote also goes to Pop.

We haven’t tried the cabins but the bedroom would concern me with adults. It’s tight sleeping quarters with the bunks right next to the queen. You’re all less than 10 feet from each other. I think this works better for parents with young children.

Pop - 4 real beds. 2 bathrooms. Skyliner.

Cabin is nice for certain types of trips. If exploring WDW is the main priority then Pop will make that easier.

I will say we greatly enjoyed an AoA family suite... with 4 adults. One couple, two singles, three sleeping surfaces and 2 baths worked out perfectly.

But I think 5 adults tips that towards two Pop rooms for the 4 queen-size beds. I'm pretty sure that's around the same price as an AoA suite anyway!

I would suggest Pop also. Someone earlier spoke about the closeness in the bedroom of the cabins. I also believe I read the bunk beds were more suitable for kids.

I would go with the POP.
