Cabin Thermostats?

Question: Do the DCL cabins each have their own thermostat? We'll be on the Dream, if it varies between ships. My mother is always cold (keeps her house set at 78), and if she knows she can set the temp high (and turn off any blowing A/C), she will be happier. She wants to bring sweatpants, a thick fleece hoodie, and a floor-length robe (think 1970s) -- I would like to try to talk her out of this but it's hard to make the case that she doesn't need that stuff without knowing whether she can regulate the temperature in her cabin. We are traveling from NY (in December), so she will also have a heavy coat as I cannot convince her to be dropped off at door to terminal and take the 10-second walk inside without it. Anyone else experienced traveling with a family member (or themselves) who run cold? How did you/they manage? Any tips/advice?

Yes. You can ask your room steward for help with it.

I have thyroid issues and jack the A/C way down (or up - making it colder) and my friend who sleeps on the fold out couch was grabbing that little bed runner thing on the main bed to throw on her since I was freezing her out! Don't keep a verandah door open long as it screws up the A/C for a row of cabins. But anyway, if she is in her own cabin then she should be fine. If you are sharing and want it cooler, she'd be wise to bring whatever will make her more comfortable. (PS. My friend lives in the Swiss Alps and I was freezing HER out!)

Thank you both for your replies!
Yes, my mom will have her own cabin (oceanview, no verandah), so hopefully she can keep it as warm as she wants.

We sailed out of NY in November 2019 (right before covid). Now that normal muster drills are back, you might want to have good jackets or coats if your muster station ends up being out on the promenade! My wife likes it cold in our cabin, so I have to be ready with some extra clothing for myself. Your cabin host/hostess will help with your temp settings. Have a great time. I'm envious. Our next one isn't until December 2023!

I will say on our May cruise we had a room at the very back of the ship and we had to call to have them make the room cooler as the thermostat didn't make it cool enough. I know it was hard to keep up with the sun shining in through the balcony most of the day so it's one that no AC could really fight. This is a long winded way to say if your mom is still cold call guest services and they can help you in addition to the room steward.

Thank you! I should have been more clear: we are flying out of NY but the cruise departs from Miami. So let's hope we don't need NY-winter-style coats for the muster drill in Miami! Nevertheless, if we do, my mom will have her "ski jacket" with her because she insists she needs it to get from me dropping her off at the curb of the airport terminal to the doors inside. Sigh. Ah well, whatever keeps her happy. :cutie:

Cold-natured here.

She can leave the robe at home. But definitely bring a coat or jacket for around the ship. Dining rooms and theaters run cold, as do outside decks after sunset.

The cotton bed comforters are cold. Ask the steward for the blankets they put on the single sofa bed (she might want two).

The thermostat is not inherently confusing - just turn it up and find where the temp is comfortable for her. (But definitely ask for help if it is confusing to her.) If available, I just turn OFF the system.

Leaving the curtains open during the day will also warm up the room.
