Cab from airport to New Orleans-French quarters

Does anyone know if cabs will typically take a longer way into the French quarters? I was recently on a trip to Las Vegas and took a cab in and after I got to the hotel I realized the cab took a way that cost double. After the fact I was told I needed to tell the cabbie to take city streets and to not get on the highway.

So is there anything I need to tell a cabbie to ensure I take the cheapest route to the French quarters.

I had the same experience in Las Vegas with a cab driver once. my friend had been there like 4 times so she called him out on trying to take a long route.

i went to Nola in May. the good news is to airport is flat rate, so it should be the same into the city, but you may want to check online. i just did a google search and the rates it pulled up were what we paid.

You shouldn't have a problem as it is a straight shot, but just in case, I think the best route would roughly be to take I-10 E towards NOLA, then you'll exit somewhere around Vieux-Carre/Orleans Ave... Depending on exactly where you are staying (FQ is a fairly large "neighborhood," it's not just the Bourbon St strip everyone thinks of). We live about an hour from NOLA so we've never used a cab, but its roughly 10-12 miles from the airport, although traffic can get backed up certain times of days. You will like the NOLA airport (MSY), it's very small and easy to navigate. Have fun!

Almost all the cabs are a set fare from the airport to the FQ, I want to say it's $34 and then so much for additional people.

Definitely suggest trying off the tourist path restaurants!

While you're in NOLA, check out the New Orleans School of Cooking. It's one of our favorite experience in the French Quarter. One Sunday morning, we also loved taking a brunch river cruise on the Mississippi River. (I think it was the Creole Queen.)

First just say French Quarter to anyone local. They are all a standard price going to and from the airport to the FQ. What part are you stay in? Like another poster said there are a lot of neighborhoods that make up that area.

I live on St Charles (where the street car runs) about 3 miles outside of the Quarter. I've taken a cab from the airport many times.

Unless it's recently been raised it's a flat $33. I usually give them $40 with tip.

I have had the drivers take many different ways. They all seem to have their favorite route. Same price, pretty much the same time.

I want to try the school of cooking but the three other people in my group were not game for it. I may just have to go on my own. Definitely want to take a riverboat cruise!

We are staying the the Homewood Suites which is a few blocks from bourbon street.

This! I was just there 2 weeks ago and it's a flat $33 one way.

By all means get yourself some beignets at Café Du Monde! New Orleans is truly a beautiful City with world class cuisine. We can't wait to go back someday! Have a wonderful trip!

That happened to us in Vegas the summer before last. Then the cabbie dumped us at the far end of the Bellagio. We called him out on it, but by then it was too late. With the traffic, it would have taken him longer to drive us to the front than for us to walk. I think people need to start complaining to someone official, maybe Chamber of Commerce or a tourist division. Tourism is that city's bread and butter; they can't afford to have a bad cab reputation.

You'll love NOLA. I always feel like I'm home when I visit.

Why don't you use Uber? After our last experience with a cab in Seattle, vowed never to take a taxi again, after years of bad experiences. I tried uber for the first time, and I love it. You know the fare you're getting, no money exchanges hands, and the drivers are much better behaved since you rate them.

I live uber! But many airports ban them from picking up at the airport.

That's true, but mostly for the uberX. Most airports do allow uber black, which is pricier, but after you tip a cabbie ends up being around the same price as a cab. Just a much cleaner car and better service!

for food Muriels in Jackson Square has good prices and for lunch (at least weekdays) they have $4 drinks. i stayed right outside the FQ at the start of the business district and we went to this place la casita twice as they had an amazing happy hour.

Haha so true!

IMHO the best po'boys in the city come from a slightly to very sketchy looking market called Verti Marte. They will deliver to FQ hotels if you don't feel like trekking over there.

I hadn't been back since I lived there 10yrs ago until this summer and couldn't believe the place was still the same and just as yumtastic.
