Am I the only one that hates the new Triptiks? I loved the old ones. Last year when we drove down for March 2016 my wife said she hated the new one. I just ordered two for this March and another trip to Nashville and I can't stand them. Everything about the old ones is better. Wish they would go back to the classic Triptiks. Oh well...

I live in WNY and they have not used TripTiks for about 3 years now.
We have absolutely no use for the new style which is basically like going back in time to mapquest print outs.
We just use our phone navigation now and it works just fine.

Count me in on this. When they first came out, we got some. Terrible! I went into the office and complained majorly. The woman seemed to understand about all the deficiencies that I pointed out, but I'm sure they haven't fixed any of them. That was a couple of years ago. I swore I'd never get any more and haven't. Luckily I still have one copy of the old ones. At this point I don't remember all the things I complained about, but I know one was the fact that hardly any of the exits were marked anymore. In the old ones, I have exits marked where there's good gas, or good places to sleep, etc. I don't think the state boundaries are even marked in the new ones - how stupid is that? And yes, the print quality was terrible. Rant over.

They really are far inferior to the old version in pretty much every way. It's not just a nostalgia thing. Yes, the classic Triptiks are what I grew up with in the 70s but these new ones just don't cut it. I won't be ordering any more since there really is no point in doing so. I actually thought about writing to the ombudsman.

I would hazard a guess that They don't get many requests for the Triptiks anymore so they aren't putting much money into them and producing as cheap as possible? Most people rely on GPS for trips. I've used GPS for years since when driving alone I can't read a map and drive at same time.
I do go to CAA before trip to pick up maps of state I'm going to. As a back up just in case GPS fails.

I'm another GPS person.... I looked at Triptiks a few decades ago. Much of that information is available online and I plan day to day (at times hour by hour) at each rest stop.

We use GPS as well, but the old triptiks allow you to plan ahead for stops by showing what exits have gas, food & lodging. GPS can probably show this as well, but only when you're within range. Sometimes you'll have quite the gap between gas options and it's good to know when to stop before running out of gas. With the old triptiks, I can guage how much gas we have left in the vehicle, look on the map and see where I want to stop. I don't think GPS gives you this ability - at least mine doesn't as far as I know.

Oh, yes, and the GPS also likes to take strange detours from time to time which, if you didn't have the triptiks to override that, who knows where you'd end up or have extra time added onto your trip for no reason.

On my Garmin.... I set it to where I'm going. It forecasts how long it take to get there. When I'm hungry or need a break... With voice recognition, I shout....
  • voice command
  • find place
  • "gas station", "rest stop", "Costco", "Walmart", "McDonald's", or "Chinese Restaurant"
  • along route
  • pick a choice.... it's here that I can see where how far each option is
  • add as next stop
so handy!

Sounds cool. We have a Garmin, but I don't think it has voice. I do know it's frequently a pain doing a search on it for places.

There's a few video samples on YouTube....

Love being able to change brightness, volume and change destinations without risking a ticket.

Oh, I should add that some of the newer versions includes a dashcam combo! That was enough for me to upgrade last year.

What I got last year...

We always get triptiks as a back up to our GPS too and do not like the new style as well. My kids also like looking at the triptiks so they can see have far we have driven, how far we have left etc.
Haha, the strange detours remark reminds me of "The Office" when GPS told Micheal to drive into a lake!:teeth:

The funniest one - and I can't remember where it happens on the way to Disney - is when the GPS wants to take us off the highway and then right back on. It's one of those exits that's also and entrance, so basically you keep going straight. Maybe doing that is 10 feet shorter than staying on the highway - I don't know.

A few years ago I did stupidly follow my older TomTom GPS's instructions. I didn't know where I was going, so I just blindly followed it, hoping it would get me to my destination. Lo and behold, it takes me into a medical center pay parking lot. I had a heck of a time trying to get out because it was gated at the exit! Didn't end up having to pay, but talk about frustration! I'm pretty sure I wouldn't follow it into a lake, however...

But GPS told me to go that way!:teeth: That would have been frustrating getting stuck in a pay parking lot, LOL! Sometimes GPS has crazy directions!

Last year someone drove INTO Georgian Bay at Tobermory because her GPS told her to! It was foggy and she literally drove off the end of the launch into the water upload_2017-3-1_20-18-41.png
