BYOS bring your own straw (Disney removing straws and more in 2019)

I didn’t think balloons were allowed in Animal Kingdom.

They aren't. Helium balloons that are released into the air can land anywhere though. Including wildlife habitats and are a potential hazard.

I hate paper straws and I’m also a germaphobe so I don’t want anyone or anything possibly touching the lid of my beverage. Now I’m just gonna have to remember to bring a box of plastic straws with me on vacation. Also I’m not paying to use reusable shopping bags and it has nothing to do withing being cheap I spend thousands of dollars every year on Disney vacations I stay at deluxe resorts etc. Disney is making insane profits on their theme parks and hotels they can easily afford to provide shopping bags. Sorry if this makes me not environmentally conscious but I’m not sorry. IMO this policy change has more to do with Disney cutting costs being environmentally conscious is just the way Disney sells to us and now they receive praise instead of criticism.

Being a germaphobe, how are you able to handle standing in extremely close proximity, sharing breath and sweat, with thousands of other people during events such as fireworks shows? I don't like touching anybody else myself, but understand that some things are just out of my control when on vacation.

Getting back to the original post---Disney is getting rid of plastic straws and cutting down on the use of plastic cups and bags. But, as a previous poster pointed out, ZIPLOC is now sponsoring KidCot and giving each child a plastic bag to hold trading cards from each country. ZIPLOC is also the new sponsor for Splash Mountain, giving riders plastic bags to keep their belongings dry. Their "commitment to environmental stewardship" sounds a bit shaky to me.

I went to the local botanical gardens this weekend and noticed many Ziploc bags floating in the water

I highly doubt plastic straws are even with in the rounding error on Disney's cost. Also paper straws are more expensive.

The bags are more annoying, I wish they'd switch to paper and ask if you need one.

Obviously like you said I can’t control everything and but I’m VERY careful when it comes to food and drink. I’ve stopped doing things like standing in a huge crowd on Main Street for fireworks. I will usually book a dessert party or go to California Grill. Also I will carry wet wipes and hand sanitizer with me and just try to be mindful of my surroundings.

How does a dessert party work when food is communal?

You could always buy reusable straws and carry them in a toothbrush case instead of being wasteful and carrying a box of one time use straws. That would take care of germ issues.

The only time I use a straw at Disney is when I get my refresher from Starbucks. Starbucks is changing to straw-less lids and paper straws at all their locations, so no big deal for me!

We have bought a few of those, and my kids love using them over and over at home. What straws should be in my mind, with the exception that these ones are a pain to clean.

At the dessert party if I think someone may have touched something without taking it I just take a dessert that’s furthest away from that specific piece of dessert.

I don’t use reusable straws because then I’d have to clean them everyday. I’m not going to have myself or my wife spending time on our family vacation cleaning straws.

You still have plenty of choices whether Disney takes away straws or plastic bags. Like you mentioned earlier you stay deluxe so you can easily have items shipped back to your resort or bring your own bag or carry them or buy the reusable bag Disney will offer. Disney isn’t forcing you into just one option.

I sure hope this isn’t meant to be an insult but even if it is it doesn’t bother me. I don’t see why I shouldn’t be allowed to eat, drink, and shop the way I want to on my vacation.

I don't think anyone thinks you shouldn't be able to vacation in a way that works for you ..... within the parameters set by the destination. We all have stuff we deal with, my family sure does. But we all have to work within what Disney is offering. We also have to follow their rules. Entering the AK last week we were told to dispose of our straw (I forgot DS still had his cup from breakfast) which we promptly did. If Disney truly wants to send the message that this is part of their plan for "environmental stewardship" they may very well ban plastic straws from property altogether. They can do that because there are other options.

I didn’t read anywhere that they are banning them outright. If they did then I’ll find another way to deal with it.
