BWV + Nasa = Dream Come True VIDEO LINK ADDED 2/10/10 New photos post #31

unfortunately, the earliest i could book was Oct 3rd, sigh...it could happen;)

im not clear on how the new 'private' mangement space system is going to work out, yet hoping for the next best thing. By then, i'll be retired & be able to hang out if i miss a launch.

It's not beyond possibility that you might see it. When we saw the launch in May I had originally thought we would see a different mission. The launch we saw had been delayed (several times I believe) and the one I thought we were going to see was pushed out on the schedule. :)

we were at Epcot a couple years ago and saw people looking up, so we looked up and got this picture of the shuttle flying over spaceship Earth. I thought that was so poetic.

I need to ask a mushroom dumb question. why cant we see launches anymore?

A lot of people don't realize but the shuttle program is being retired. There are only 4 more launches/missions before it's history.

That's a cool shot of the shuttle over Spaceship Earth!

Jean, I am so happy you and your dh got to see it. That had to be very exciting and how many people get to experience that in their lifetime.

How wonderful to have seen this! I really enjoyed seeing the video, thank you.

why? and what are their next plans?

Great video. Totally stupid comment, but it's amazing how bright the area became when the shuttle was launched and how dark it was after it was gone. Very cool, and congrats on being able to see one.

I believe originally the shuttle was going to fly longer but after the loss of Columbia the decision was made to retire the aging fleet in 2010 and they have stuck to that. There is another rocket system that was being developed to take people to the space station but that isn't going to be completed for several more years (2015?) and then also plans to develop something to go back to the moon and possibly mars. From little snips I've heard the new budget proposal from the president pretty much would end the moon/mars idea and might even end the rocket transport for the space station. Private commercial companies are supposed to step in - at least that's the idea.

It's really the end of an era. :sad1:

Here are 3 photos that were taken by another person who has fancy photo equipment and was at the launch with us. I think that they are gorgeous!

Wow Jean soooo happy you and DH got to see the launch :goodvibes ! The photos & video are amazing :thumbsup2 I am sure it is absolutely breath-taking seeing that in person, I would probably be moved to tears. DH & I drove out there couple years ago from WDW with the kids for an afternoon launch which ended up being scrubbed and we haven't had an opportunity since :sad1:
