Buying Southwest Points?

I just got an email from Southwest with “buy 5,000 or more points and get an extra 40% worth of points.” So buy 10,000, get an extra 4,000.

I’ve never used or bought SW points before. But it looks like buying points would save me about $60 on an upcoming trip. Does anyone have experience with this?

Thanks!

Southwest charges 2.75¢ per point while points are redeemed at a rate closer to 1.7¢. Even with a 40% bonus, that math wouldn’t save you any money.

It's not a "bad" deal, especially if you already have points in your account. The best thing about booking with points is that your ticket basically becomes 100% refundable. If the price drops, you simply "change" your flight and the difference in points is refunded to your account. If you need to cancel, you get your points back.

I'm in a pickle right now because I am planning on traveling with my DD's in October. We are limited to when we can depart (must be after 5 pm on a Friday or before noon on Saturday) so I am hesitant to commit to SWA until they release their itinerary. Right now, I know that there are flights on Delta and American that will fit our needs, but I'd prefer to fly on SWA since they are typically cheaper. For our trip home, we can fly home Friday late afternoon or evening, or any time on Saturday. So I could lock us in to a return flight on SWA because we are super-flexible with our trip home. I have about 10K points available now and for (3) R/T tickets, I would need about 60K (max...that would be about $375 r/t each) so to buy another 50K worth of points, with the special, I would buy 35K which would get me 49K. That would cost me $962.50, which would "save" me about $150. It only "saves" me money because I already have 10K points available, BUT it makes those tickets refundable. On top of that, I have a trip planned for October 2019 so if the price goes down, I can always save the points and use them towards my trip next year. Unfortunately, since we are really limited on our departure choices, I cannot lock us in to SWA until they release their itinerary. So the best I can do right now is buy enough points to cover the flight home. I may just buy 20K worth of points so that I can cover our return flight. That way, I still have enough in my cash budget to cover the cost of our tickets if we have to fly on a different airline.

It sounds like I am in the same boat as you. I have about 10000 points already banked and need to book a rather last minute flight for a bachelorette party in March. Some flights are already sold out and there isn’t a lot of choice as the inbound airport isn’t that large. It looks like I could buy the 10,000 points, 14,000 with the bonus, for $275, which combined with my points covers the entire flight. Buying the flight outright would be $400. So I understand where it wouldn’t make sense, but in this case I think it does.

This. I have,in the past bought some points when I needed them simply b/c I wanted the 100% refundability of them to use. But I was adding to the bank of points I already had,and the cost was approx. the same as just buying tickets (a sale) so it was worth it to me. I love the flexibility of the points tickets....

Exactly! You're either paying $400 OOP or you are paying $275 OOP...either way, you are taking the flight, right? So which would you rather pay? $400 or $275? If you pay the $275, you are also making your trip refundable right up until the day you leave so if something comes up, you can always cancel and get your points back, completely unrestricted.

I decided to buy 16K points this morning. With the bonus, I received 22,400 points for $440. This, combined with the points I already have in my account should get me 3 one-way tickets in October. I budgeted for airfare in the $180/ticket range and I am fairly confident that I can get a flight for less than that.
