Is there something you can buy to get the burnt smell out of a microwave? My daughter burned some noodles last week really bad, I mean bad! And the microwave can still make the kitchen stink.

I'd like to know too. At work about once a year someone burns something in the microwave, and we just buy a new microwave. But they buy $35 microwaves, so no big loss

I tried lemon juice, vinegar, baking soda and nothing worked,,the burnt residue gets into the inside mechanism of the microwave where you can't clean.
We bought a new one. Since my son paid for it I think he will be a bit more careful when using it now.
Best wishes
Hugs Mel

My son microwaved a cup of mac and cheese without the water and it smelled awful. This was actually his second time doing it. The first time it took months to get the smell to go away. This second time I asked my cleaning lady if she had any tips and used Mrs. Meyers Vinegar cleaner about two weeks after the incident. She scrubbed it pretty well and the smell was gone!

This is exactly what she did. Lol.

My daughter did this once in high school. We tried cleaning it for a week then gave up and got a new one.

I always have wondered why there isn't some sort of safety device in microwaves that prevents them from operating too long at too high a power.
Our last incident involved a frozen burrito from the vending machine being cooked on high for 30 minutes instead of 3 minutes. The person who put it in got called away and forgot about it.
Is there ever a legitimate time when you would microwave something on high for 30 minutes?

I haven't had the burnt smell, but for strong cooking smells I leave a plate of dry coffee grounds in there overnight. Of course if you don't like the smell of coffee this won't really work for you! I do the same if there are cooking smells in the kitchen... leave a plate overnight on the counter.

Yes. If there weren't long-running microwave recipes, manufacturers wouldn't enable long cooking times.
On "High" power? I can't imagine you would have anything left but a chunk of coal if you microwaved any food on high for 30 minutes.

Our 0 is quite near the start button. Sometimes DH has forgotten to reset something and when I put in a time , it went for minutes instead of seconds.

Which is why microwave ovens have different cooking levels as well.

You can't fix stupid, and microwaves aren't new.

Yes, but the post was about 30 minutes on High.

Again:
  • Personal responsibility
  • You can't fix stupid, and
  • Just like ovens let you set different temperature levels, microwave ovens let you set different cooking levels.
  • Ovens don't have automatic shut-off; just Saturday I was talking to someone who was awakened by fire engines at 2 AM because a neighbor out something in the oven and tell asleep.
  • Microwave ovens are not only for reaheating. People cook in them.

My 10 year old son did this too! I ended up replacing the microwave.

Yes, there are things that take 30 minutes in the Microwave on high.

1. Whole chickens
2. Beef stew
3. Various other casseroles with meat
