Buying resale use year - wife is a member with parents

Hi everyone,

There is so much information here! I love it!

I have a question that i hope someone here might be able to answer. My wife is a DVC owner through her parents (her parents bought direct and she was listed as an owner at the time of purchase). If I understand things correctly, most people recommend trying to buy resale in the same use year as your other membership. As far as I can tell, the benefit for this has to do with only having one membership number so you can potentially do things with both sets of points more easily. Please correct me if I am wrong, as I am trying to soak in as much information as possible!

Our plan is to buy points at a different resort to essentially act independent of her parent's points and membership, but there will likely be times where we both go at the same time, although we might be at different resorts. Would you recommend still buying the same use year or should we look for a deal that works for us? If we are coordinating trips I can see how having the same use year is important so that we can both book 11 months or 7 months out at the same time, but I am not sure of other benefits.

Since it will be a separate membership and used separately, you should choose a use year that provides the most protection for your travel habits. Don't assume that your in-laws picked the best use year.

You are not combining memberships so buy for a resort and UY that works for you and your wife. The worst thing that people can do when buying into DVC is to base your purchase on other family members. I say this because it is a big financial investment for you and your wife. Your work schedules might limit you to traveling certain times of the year -- this is where UY is very important. Sometimes people may want to buy to bring other families or to travel at the same time as others --- this only complicates an already difficult decision.

Buy what you and your wife want and need. Chances are even if you have a different UY if you manage your account properly it shouldn't limit you traveling with your in-laws.

The only way to have one membership number would be to have both contracts deeded the same -- your name would need to be added to theirs and then you would have to include them on your membership -- the crossing over of financial properties is not the best idea due to other legalities that can occur

Thank you so much for both of your responses. We are both professors, so we are limited to visiting during breaks as we don't have vacation time during the school year until our kids start school and then it will be even more limited to their breaks.

Is that UY one that gives the best protection against last minute cancellations? If it's a pretty good one then it wouldn't be the worst idea to match up as your wife is on the other contract and I'm guessing will inherit although not knowing the ages of your inlaws that may be a long ways down road. If it doesn't work well and since you'll be buying another resort and using on your own then it could possibly be better to select a new UY. And you know that if you plan on using the points together with the other contract that the home resort is retained with the points if they are transferred? (And you can transfer a different UY into another contract) So you'd be waiting until 7 months to book and use them together.

Do your own thing. Matching their UY is more or less pointless at this point. The only reason that might change is if her parents decided to give you their membership at some point.

This would be my suggestion as well. You'll still get many of the benefits by living at the same address as a qualified owner. If you were looking at CCV or a smaller contract, you could buy retail but I'd only go that route for 50 pts or less.

Your Use Year plays no role in when you can make a reservation. You can book starting 11 months from check-in when paying with home resort points and 7 months from check-in when paying with non-home points, regardless of your UY.
