Buying DVC points for a single night?

Hello:

We are looking at the possibility of renting DVC points for a single night. We aren't even really sure if that's possible or how to go about doing it. We are just starting to read up about it and trying to wrap our heads around it.

The short version of what we're doing is that we'll be in Orlando from Nov. 27-Dec. 8. We are currently planning to make it a USO on-site holiday this time around.

However, we are planning to do MVMCP on night. Likely Nov. 29, though possibly Dec. 4. Due to circumstances in our family (health and disability issues), we are thinking that it might be easier for us to check into a Disney resort hotel the afternoon of our party and just head back to that resort after our late-night at the "party" rather than dealing with getting to the TTC and driving back across the city to USO.

We'd likely still ultimately be staying and paying for our USO room that night, as we don't really want to deal with the added logistics of checking out and checking back in and baggage storage/movement, etc.

Booking a one night via Disney (for what's currently listed as available) just isn't cost effective or budget prudent. And if we were to book a hotel off-site in DS area or just outside the gates, well ... we aren't really doing much in trying to eliminate the time/hassle of dealing with transit, traffic and driving.

So we've started casually (for now) looking into "renting" DVC points for that one night to stay on site, as it looks like we might be able to get a room for a lot cheaper. It looks like Animal Kingdom Lodge Studio would be the cheapest option. Though, we do know staying at one of the Magic Kingdom deluxe resorts might be the smartest if we really want to make dealing with any kind of transit time a bigger non-issue. And, it might work out well, in that we had wanted to see the decorations at GF and possibly do the Afternoon Tea there too. So it could be a next day activity as well.

We are just wondering about people's input on the logic and feasibility of doing this? And just how to go about it? Or thoughts on if the logistics we have off are a little crazy and wouldn't really work.

We've never looked at DVC point-renting as an option before so we're on a bit of a learning curve. We are trying to do this on a pretty firm budget this time. So keeping it "economical" (ha ... when it involves Disney) is a priority. MVMCP will be our only Disney park day this trip. We might be back over to Disney to go to DS one afternoon, and likely a dinner or two at one of the resort hotels at some point during our holiday (Sanaa). There's also some interest in seeing/visiting some of the gingerbread displays but I don't know if that will happen as it's getting to the point that it sounds like we'll be spending more time over on Disney property than USO! But we so far haven't been able to find a way to make Disney "affordable" for the budget we have set for this trip.

Do you mean renting points? Or actually buying points for a single night?

You probably would have an extremely difficult time finding any resale contract with just enough points for a single night, contracts that’s small (if they exist) are scarce and expensive for the cost per point. Buying direct from Disney is not an option is as Disney will only sell contracts of 75 points and up to new members (last I looked). Also assuming you could even find a small enough contract you have on going maintenance fee’s, plus closing costs.

You should look into renting from a current member IMO. You will still save over booking a room from Disney without all I talked about above.

One other thing of note is late Nov-early Dec is DVC busy season.

Yes, renting. Sorry. We are still learning the correct jargon around this. We have no interest in a contract. Just staying a single night.

No worries thats what I assumed you meant.

Check out the rent/trade board on the DVC forums here if you want to use a private owner (usually cheaper than rental company) - https://www.disboards.com/forums/dvc-rent-trade.29/

If you want to use a company there are a few, just google DVC rentals and take your pick, just look for a reputable company.

Good to know. We have been to USO on-site previously and were told the week after American thanksgiving is their least busy of the season. Based on our time there last year, if not entirely true, it was at the very least a very slow period. Very quiet hotel, very low queue times in the parks, fast security checks, no wait on boat/bus transport to parks.

So good to know that it doesn't work the same way for DVC. Will definitely rule out trying to look into more than the one night then. The prices being quoted on the calculator had us contemplating maybe looking into trying to rent points for the entire period instead. But won't bother if it's a busy period over on the Disney property. Purposely picked the week to try to avoid that.

As I understand what you want to do you have a hotel at Universal and want to be closer to Disney for one day. There are typically a lot of reasonably priced non-Disney hotels just off the property that might work. Don't know how that disney timeshare/points thing works, but most likely it won't be economical compared to an offsite hotel which is just outside the property. Most disney hotels are rather expensive.

It is very late to be looking at DVC Rental for Nov Dec 2018. As a PP stated that is DVC high season and it usually books completely early.
If you priced Animal Kingdom Values there is virtually no likelihood of that being available. There are only a few and they are scooped up by members at 11 months. You need to look at somewhere else and budget for that

I have an easy solution for you: Uber. Ubering there and back is much cheaper than renting a room for the night, even if you could get a DVC room. Have the Uber drop you off at the Contemporary and then walk over to MK. Same for the way back. You won't have to drive you won't have to worry about being too tired, and you won't have to pay for a room you're not going to use for that night. It seems like the simplest solution to me.

This is absolutely correct. Out of curiosity I checked DVC availability for 11/29-12/4, and there is almost nothing available other than a random one night here or there, which might be difficult for a DVC member to book since it might get booked by someone else between the time you ask and the time they're actually able to book. Plus there's a weekend involved in those dates, which makes it even more difficult since some members will book for a weekend to go check out the Christmas decorations or do the party.

Plus, a couple of the nights that were available were 2- or 3-bedrooms, which I'm guessing is not what you're looking for if you're on a budget.

It's not that the parks are overly busy, it's just that Oct- first week of Jan is the busiest time of the year for DVC (known as "Fall Frenzy". Rooms are less expensive during this period and there are lots of extra things going on (Food & Wine, parties, etc) that members take advantage of.

DVC in Oct/Nov is pretty much booked solid by the end of March.

If you want DVC for those dates, it really is an 11-month booking.

And the calculators are misleading. They will give you the rate for AKV Value, but they aren't telling you availability. I don't even have to look to know that if you want AKV Value the week after Thanksgiving and it is any later than December 25 of the prior year, it's not available. But the calculators don't tell you that.
