Sorry if this is asked previously. I’m interested in purchasing DVC but the initial buy ins are really high. We just want to make sure it is for us. We are thinking of getting resale contract of 100 points to start. After that as a resale owner can we then buy direct add on of only 50 points are riviera?? I know we won’t have blue card but don’t want to commit full 150 points at riviera. We just want to make sure we have reasonable exit strategy as a riviera 50 point contract should be easier to u load than 150 points. Not that we are planning on selling but would like to have options
Thanks

Yes. One of the advantages of starting with resale is that you can join for less than 150 points and once you’re a member, you’re a member. You can add on small contracts (and qualify for existing member incentives), even if that total is still less than 150.

Note to qualify for the blue card, you need 150 total *Direct.*

Perfect! Thanks

Also know that when you add on 50 points direct at Riviera, it must be purchased in the same use year as your resale points. In order to have a different use year when purchasing direct, you must buy at least 150 points since it's considered a new membership. I just thought I'd mention this so you can plan ahead.

Also, (assume you know, but just in case), 50 points won't go very far at the Riviera and resale points can't be used there. You'll have to book as soon as the 11 month window opens to be sure of getting the lower point options.

Good luck with your decision.

Second this, definitely don't buy RIV planning to book the low point tower studios every time, they are very hard to get, even for owners at 11 mos. But for a night or 2 in a studio, or an every other year type plan, 50 could work just fine. Good luck!

I’d definitely start with a resale contract. If it’s not for you, it’s much better financially to offload a resale contract and recoup most of your cost than is direct. Don’t get caught up in the “blue card” status. I’m still not finished counting the thousands I’ve saved buying resale. I also don’t miss any of the so called benefits it claims to come with as they continue to disappear. Buy where you would want to stay. Don’t rely on potential availability elsewhere.

Want to add that recently, the website has showed that RIV can be added on with as little as 25 points. Again, it won't get very far, but with an every other year plan, you could add a few nights in a studio if that is all you are looking for...or, give you an opportunity to eventually get the number of points you want at that resort vs. all 150.

The nice thing for those who want a little RIV, access to the rest, and not all direct is that you can do it all buy having resale for the L14 resorts, and RIV direct for the stays there! Best of all worlds!!!

Unless you specifically WANT Riviera, I would add on at the home resort of the resale points, so you can easily use them together at 11 months....just be sure your resale is a resort you'll be happy staying at.
