Buying and using Points from Home Resort Questions

We are in the process of buying 165 points at AKV. We have always intended to have multiple home resorts - we want to get about 100 points at either BCV or BWV within the next year. We'll probably get a smaller number of points at whatever they end up calling the new tower at the Contemporary down the road.

I have several questions...

Should we get all our points in the same names? (The first contract is actually my mother, my husband, and me, since we all wanted to be able to get the member discounts.) I guess I'm just asking if it will it make things more complicated if my mom isn't on all the deeds?

Can we merge all our points at the 7 month window? I've heard that it can be more complicated or even impossible to do so if your contacts have different use years. What would I have to do to link accounts?

Can I have the same membership number on all accounts even if I buy some from Disney and some resale?

Finally, for 100 BWV or BCV points, would I be better off waiting on Disney to come up with some, or buying resale? It looks like most contracts for resale are offered at about $20 a point less than the ones that Disney offers, but the closing costs seem to just about make up the difference in savings... Does that seem right?

Add-ons to your original contract will have to be deeded the same as the original so all names must be included. You will also have the same Use Year for all contracts purchased this way. If you were to purchase another 160 point contract the deed could be titled differently and have a different Use Year.

All of the add-ons will have the same member ship number even if they are at different resorts. If you purchase thru resale and all contracts are titled exactly the same, DVC will often apply them to the same original contract providing they have the same Use Year. If you do that, I'd also contact DVC prior to closing to let them know you want the resale purchase added to your other contract - otherwise it might not happen. The important thing is that all names must be the same and the Use Year must be the same.

At 7 months, all points from the same contract - regardless of Home Resort - may be combined to make reservations. Even if they are from different contracts, reservations may be made and linked together.

Deed currently in three names. If you go to buy points from Disney as an add-on, they will add-on only to that contract with same names and same use year. If you want to buy additional points in fewer names (eliminate mother), it is just like being a new buyer and you can still buy but not as an add-on and thus will be subject to the new purchaser 160 point minimum and can get different use year if desired.

If you buy an add-on from Disney at another resort (and keep same names), points will be in same use year. At 7 months out you can combine the points to reserve at any DVC resort. If not using all the points in the use year, you just tell them which ones to use (e.g., all from one resort, half from one and half from another, etc. your choice) , not a difficult process at all.

Other than buying from Disney, you can go resale. With resale, you get the use year that the seller has. If he has the same use year as you AND you purchase in the same three names as your orginal contract, it will end up being just like an add-on as above and all the points will be treated as if they are together in one contract and member number and same 7 month process as above.

If you buy a new contract from Disney in fewer names, or buy a new contract through resale in fewer names, or buy a new contract in resale with same names but different use year than original contract, then the contracts will be considered seperate and they will be treated as separate ownerships with new and separate member numbers. In that case, you can still use both contracts to make a combined ressie at 7 months out but the process is somewhat different. You essentially make two reservations, one for some of the nights using one of the contracts, and then one for the other nights using the other contract, and then have them link the two reservations so it becomes one. Also not a very complicated process (we have two separate contracts in two different use years and often make ressies using both), but it just has a tad more thought to it (do I use one contract for most of the nights or the other?) and you need to keep track of both contracts and banking deadlines for both.
