Not sure how accurate it is, but someone pointed out before that a cheaper printer will cost you more in ink. I would look at the ink it will use (cost), how it will be used and read a ton of reviews before purchasing.
I bought a Kodak printer about a year ago from Walmart. I just saw my printer in a Big Lots ad today for $47. Not sure if you have those near you but you could probably find some sales online. Kodak has the cheapest ink cartridges. My HP printer worked fine, but the huge amount I was paying for ink was killing me. I tried getting the cartridges refilled and ended up with a mess of ink everywhere a couple of times before I stopped trying those. I have been really happy with the Kodak.
All consumer-grade printers are inexpensive; they make their money on ink, not the hardware. Don't bother with the price tag of the printer, you should be researching how much the ink costs.
Target had two Epsons clearanced at $34 and $41. I was there yesterday, we don't need one so I didn't pay much attention. You might want to check a few Targets out.
I bought a printer about 2 years ago that prints only in black (no color). I have yet to replace the ink cartridge and I print a LOT (probably close to 20 pages a week or so)
thank you for posting this. it may be an option for me-i print a lot of coupons and DD14 does essays, etc., on my computer for school, so i may come out cheaper with a laser printer.

It really has been the best option for us. It lasts a LONG time.
Just for an example, I have a laser printer in my classroom (I teach technology), and we print A LOT! I go through 2 ink toners a year with regular every day printing by all of my students.

I'd recomend a lazer printer if you're not going to do a lot of picture printing. I have a lazer and my toner is only $30 and lasts at least a year, if not more.
Also a huge plus, if you can find a store that still accepts/pays for toner they always pay a little more for toner v. ink.
