I am getting ready to buy the Sony A55 and I am debating whether to buy a lens or not. I currently have an A100 with two lenses: Sony DT 1.8/50 SAM and a Minolta AF 28-105.

I don't really want the kit lens (18-55) but see that Crutchfield currently has a $100 off a SONY lens with the purchase of an A55. The Sony SAL-55200/2 DT is listed at $200. So, if I am doing my math right, that would make this lens the same price as the 18-55 kit lens. The Sony SAL 75300 Lens is listed at $249 so that would be $50 more that the kit lens.

I have always been interested in having a Telephoto lens but am honestly not sure how often I would switch lenses. I currently use my Minolta 28-105 the most and switch to the 50m when I am going to events because they usually look at the length of the lens to determine if it is "professional".

I guess I am just looking to see if this would be a good deal or if I could find a better quality telephoto used for a similar price. I bought the Minolta lens from KEH.

The one and only lower cost telephoto lens that I can think of for you to look at is a used Minolta 100-200mm f/4 if you are looking to inexpensively give something longer a try. But depending on the condition you get it may not be that much less than either lens that you are looking at. Reviews do seem to be little bit better between those two for the 55-200 but the 75-300mm seems well liked for the cost.

If you thought about setting money aside you might really like a super zoom since you're not too keen on changing lenses. The Sony 18-250 is very nice or if you can find a used Tamron 18-250 it's almost identical. That lens almost never leave's DH's A100. :thumbsup2

I decided to go with the 55-200. So, I have the camera and the lens on order from Crutchfield and an extra battery and new 32GB Class 10 SDHC card coming from Amazon.

Can't way to try everything out!!!

Have fun with the A55! I've had one for a few months and it's really a great camera. :thumbsup2

Congrats.. I've had mine a little over a month now and still really love it for both pics and HD video. We're even thinking about getting a second one for my wife!
