Can anyone tell me if you can purchase gift cards at the Disney store that are not gift cards for use in the store, but than can be used at WDW itself? We are bringing our 18 year old starving student with us who we thought might be a little short on spending money (we thought she might appreciate this more than the princess dresses and the BBB make-over that her 4 & 7 year old sisters will be getting :rotfl:)

I crossed the border last week to shop in Michigan. Made a special trip to the Disney store for this reason.(to get gift cards for the kids) Have to pay in US funds and get the gift card there (my understanding/correct me if I am misunderstood) I bought these for stockings etc. On the back it shows where it can be used--In WDW, on DCL, on line Disney stores, and other Disney stores. Lots of options.

Does anyone know if you can get these at the Canadian Disney stores? (ie. gift cards in US$)? We live at least 2 hrs from the nearest US border and I wouldn't know where to find the nearest Disney store from there!

If you have a DS close by go in and ask to see the card. I have no idea if they sell USD gift cards but my feeling is that they do not.

Our closest Disney store is also over a 2 hour drive away (I know, we live in the boonies!). Hoping someone here knows for sure? It would just be seem nicer to give DD a gift card rather than a handful of cash.

Call them and hopefully you will get someone helpful. Get them to actually read the back of the card if they say 'yes it can be used in the parks"

You can purchase gift cards through the Disney World website however I am not sure whether or not they ship to Canada or if they can have the cards available when you check in.

The website also mentions that they can create personalized gift cards. I would recommend calling the Disney Dream Makers to see what they say.

You can purchase them in the parks. I considered buying one while I was there, just for my own use, rather than take my credit card. I ended up just using the cc but I know I saw it on quite a few store counters. You could buy it at WDW and then not worry about travelling to the nearest store or ordering online etc.

And I know all about how far the nearest stores are! The nearest Disney store from here is in Halifax, around a 3 hour drive.

This might be the best option. I don't know if we'll be near a Disney store before our vacation and I'm not sure if I'd get a chance to make a special trip to one anyways (if they even have $US cards).
Our first afternoon there is largely going to be taking care of "administrative stuff" anyways - getting my DH's birthday gift certificate (in lieu of his free entry), getting a GAC for our youngest daughter, etc - I might as well add this to the list. ;)

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

No, you cannnot buy Disney Gift cards here in Canada at the Disney Stores. It has everything to do with the exchange rate.

You can, however, buy them online at Disney.com. They DO ship to Canada, but it will cost you $14.00.

Do to the ever changing exchange rate, I don't wan't to take a chance and use my CC while on vacation (my luck, the rate will drop to less than .50;))so I saved up all my vacation spending money and purchased the Gift Cards online. I wanted to do it all in one shot so I only had to pay the $14.00 once and I waited until the dollar was @ .92.

That's a good idea. Our younger kids are going to want to bring their own spending money. Gift cards might be a safer/easier way for them to manage their cash. Thanks! :thumbsup2

Are you staying at a Disney Hotel?? If nothing has changed since my last visit ....everyone gets their own room key as it is your park ticket as well ... and you can charge to it. I THINK you can set a limit on the kids cards - so if you wanted to provide her with $200 in spending $$ - I beleive you can set that as a limit on her card. That way there is no chance of unspent $$ left over (not like there would likely be a high risk of that any way :upsidedow) . Just a thought.

That's a great idea - I hadn't even thought of that (and I think I knew we could do it!) Thanks!:thumbsup2

If you don't mind me asking what part of SWO do you live in? I know of a place in Port Huron that you can ship to and they only charge $5 to pick up your parcel. If you are interested I can send you the shipping info. They are right across the border if you want to order from Disneyshopping.

We're about two hours north of Sarnia. Thanks for your suggestion (that might be useful for future purchases!) I think we're going to go with just setting a limit and letting DD charge stuff to the room though (with a very strict limit!) - my DH really liked that idea. She's the type of gal that would blow the bundle just for the sake of shopping, so he thinks she might put a little more thought into her purchases if she doesn't just have a gift card burning a hole in her pocket (ya right ... :rotfl:)

If you ever need it just PM me. I have used it may times. I am a big fan of shopping in the US but then again I am only 45 mins from Sarnia. 2hrs isn't to bad of a drive. Are you going to MNSSHP? I will see you will be there around halloween. We went last year for our first time and it was great.

My inlaws are in Sarnia, so we make it down every couple of months.
Yes, we are going to MNSSHP - right on Halloween actually. I'm a little worried about the crowds, but I'm sure we'll still have a great time.
