But what about the kids?

Rumor has it, everyone in Canada should be able to get their first dose of a vaccine by Canada Day (as per the latest news yesterday.) The big question is going to be... what about the kids? They don't even have the option of getting vaccinated any time soon, so will they be able to leave the country once the borders open? What about quarantines? Will they be different for those who are vaccinated and those who aren't? As a Mom of three kids under 10, this is the biggest question we have right now in regards to future travel :( I'd book Disney TODAY if I had that answered.

I don’t think we will know until this summer. I’m hoping that with a lot of people vaccinated cases will drop so much that it won’t be an issue? We have October booked. But my youngest won’t be vaccinated. And for that trip we couldn’t have him do a quarantine either.

So if there are things like quarantines still in place we will postpone again. I’m hoping they will have something approved for kids by the end of the year.

I keep hearing that kids under the age of 12 will probably be vaccinated by the 1st quarter of 2022. No plans for big vacations for us anytime this year and our kids are 14 years old. Holding on to hope for 2022. Seems SO far away right now.

I’m kind of assuming that if the rest of us in higher risk populations are vaccinated that we will be able to open up or loosen some restrictions even without children being vaccinated, simply because they aren’t getting seriously ill or hospitalized for Covid in the vast majority of cases . But that assumption only . It really remains to be seen .

I really really really hope so! All my kids are under 10, so they wont even be in the first group of kids vaccinated.

No offence to anyone in my post,,, just my thoughts,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, sometimes I ramble on.

I think eventually there will be vaccines for kids.
To get to this point many trials are needed along with a whole mountain of data that will need to be analyzed and processed.
Then there will be all the government regulations to pass said vaccines.
This is going to take a year or more in my opinion as different age groups will need to be tested.

Although most kids get their vaccines (MMR etc. . ) there are still some who do not. (not going to go into that discussion as it will shut this thread down PDQ).
How Countries / Schools/ Sports organizations etc. will handle this is uncertain at this point.

J.M.H.O. (Just My Honest Opinion)
Our biggest obstacle right now is getting enough adults vaccinated in order to not become overwhelmed with variants which could potentially start effecting younger people at an accelerated rate.
I do think we should be hitting this Virus like a fire and hitting the hotspots before they rage like a wildfire.

I do see travel changing for a few years for families.
Local, province to province travel.

Many of the kids I work with online are not going to be able to go back to school next year,,,
their parents have already faced this and are openly discussing future plans with us.
They are a wonderful group of people and I think of all the hardships they have had to go through,, but
they just keep on swimming.

I know it's not easy to not know what the future will bring but rest assured many people are working hard to get us out of this
Pandemic.

Hugs
Mel

I am holding out hope that my girls (6 and 8) can be vaccinated before our planned trip next March. If not, we will likely push it to summer 2022 as I am nearly positive they will be vaccinated by then.

The other possibility is that having adults vaccinated greatly lowers the overall risk. Perhaps children will then be able to travel with a negative PCR and maybe a shortened quarantine upon return.

a story that caught my eye was Royal Caribbean announced they would start sailing again out of Israel. All adults on board will need to be vaccinated ... children are still allowed to board with a negative test. That gives me some hope that travel companies/countries will work with families to find a viable solution.

Pfizer had good results on trials 12 to 18 year olds, I suspect that will be approved by fall. They are starting trials on 6 months to 11 years from what I understand, so I am hopeful it will be by early next year. I believe J&J is already in trials for children, and I think AZ as well?

My son turns 12 in December, and he wants it, I want it for him too. Hopefully by the time it's ready for them, there will be availability and they won't have to wait 4 months between doses.

Who knows....by then they may say that 4 months is optimal.... 8-)

We won’t travel until our 12 year olds are vaccinated. My worry would be how would we deal with a case of Covid in one of the twins while away? We would not be able to board a plane and would be stuck until the kids were well. How long would that be? What if there were complications? My dh would have to leave me abroad and go home to work, so I’d be alone with sick children in a foreign country. None of these scenarios are anything I’d like to experience. I agree with Mel. Travel for kids is a ways off. Sticking closer to home in the short term will be the way to go. I do hope adult vaccinations drive down infection numbers, but we will see.

I completely understand that concern! A lot of airlines are covering medical bills related to Covid up to 200k though. Keep that in mind!

With respect, $200,000 is not much coverage if you ended up in the hospital in the ICU or God forbid, on a ventilator.

My husband had a one night stay in a hospital in Mexico and it was just over $15,000 USD! Minor surgery, three xrays.

Also, AirCanada won’t cover any quarantine expense resulting from a Covid positive test. Benefits are quite limited.

From air Canada....

What's not covered
  • Travel booked for periods longer than 21 days (the entire trip is not eligible).
  • Travel beyond September 7, 2021.
  • Tickets purchased from another airline, even if that airline is a code-share partner airline of Air Canada, regardless of whether the flight is operated by Air Canada.
  • Travel during your cruise dates, or any expenses related to your cruise.
  • Quarantine expenses after a COVID-19 positive test result, denied entry, or contact tracing in destination.
  • One-way tickets.
  • Air Canada Vacations bookings are not eligible as they are subject to a separate complimentary COVID-19 insurance coverage and policy. More details here.
  • Residents of any other country aside from Canada.
  • Changes to existing bookings, with an original purchase date prior to February 1, 2021 are not eligible.

Ack...I see my reply was lost in the hack ☹

A quick recap:

- I don't think kids will slow down the return to normalcy for businesses, travel etc... since they aren't as at risk (for catching, severe disease, or spreading)
- We will travel regardless of the vaccination status of our children, because we can't put our lives on hold forever. Covid will be with us forever and at some point we just have to accept that and move on, despite being a higher risk household. However - that said, we will not travel to Disney or other similar, busy venues until case counts are low, for the next year or two (depending on how things go) we'll probably continue to mask in indoor locations, we won't travel during cold/flu season and we won't be flying.

There are a couple of insurance companies that include Covid coverage up to 1 or 2M.

For my family, I don’t plan to vaccinate my kids at this time. I plan to get it myself and my husband too but a clinical trial on kids is not enough for me right now to vaccinate my child, not knowing what the long term effects are.... actually this is what my kid’s paediatrician said who has been caring for our kids since birth. At this point covid is a very low risk to kids and based on what I know today, I would travel with my kids not vaccinated against covid, as long as pandemic was declared over and majority of adults have been vaccinated.
I am not saying no for sure, but at this point I don’t plan to get it for my kids unless things change. I think once majority of the adults are vaccinated this may not be a requirement for kids. I’m taking a wait and see approach with the kids.

Yes there are and thank you for mentioning that. My point was in reference to the $200,000. It’s better than nothing but just not enough and many people don’t know what coverage they have, the conditions surrounding coverage and it’s so important....especially during these times.

I hear you. And it is always a risk. There have been minimal instances of children being hospitalized due to Covid though, so that’s something you just have to decide for yourself. I respect both sides of the decisions :)

this is what I am hoping too! I saw a recent sort saying ON only had 7 cases in long term care
Facilities, so vaccines are clearly working at minimizing cases.
