It's a spelling word. If a student can justify a correct spelling and I was the teacher I would give credit.
However, as a parent, I would respect the teacher's wishes if he or she insisted on the following directions and learning a list of words debate going on here.
Perhaps partial credit is in order here. Credit for correct spelling and a demerit for not following directions.

Ok folks there are enough people who are illiterate in this country (and the world). Yet here we are arguing over 2 spellings of a word that are both deemed correct.
Yes, let's further make kids not want to read and write by being this picky because it wasn't the word on the word list (yet still correct). Let's further teach them that they have to think inside the box or they are wrong.
