newcomer needing to know why I keep seeing "bump" as a reply in threads?

Thanks for any insight -

because people want the thread to show up as having "new" messages so it has a better chance of getting responded to. . . . sometimes someone will ask a question and for one reason or another no one responds . . . if it gets to the second or later page of threads it has less of a chance of getting read/responded to, so people will "bump" it up to the head of the line

also, if you note the "reply" is usually from the person who originally posted the message to begin with

You will often see "bump" posts in threads on the Rent/Trade board. We require the thread owner to maintain their thread by posting a reply to it at least once every 7 days. If the owner is actively involved in the thread (answering questions for example) that suffices. If there is no other activity on the thread, the thread owner can just post a "bump" reply to the thread to satisfy the requirement. If the thread isn't maintained, it gets closed automatically by the software we use to process the Rent/Trade board. The full R/T board rules can be found in the "sticky" posts at the top of the board.
