DS went to a BAB party a month ago. BAB did put coupons in the box, hardly a "goody", it's marketing. They want me to come back and spend more money.
The mother did do a small goody bag in addition. It wasn't much, just some bubbles (party pack type) and a few stickers--probably all the goody bags together cost under $5, bought in bulk from the dollar store. I thought the bear and outfit was plenty. The party mom said though, that was the activity that her DD choose (her emphasize, not mine).
Personally, as kids get older, I think you can relax on the goody bag. I mean, come on, at 12 kids don't need goody bags, but a 5 yo might be pretty dissappointed without one. And you can do a great goody bag without actually having to spend a ton of money; I never do, but it always looks like I do.
