My family is gonna be at the Fort, first time camping there, I was wondering if anyone that has been there in March has gotten eaten alive? Reg bugs don't bother me, I just don't like skeeters and gnats!! I am bringing bug spray, but wondering if we should get a screen room? Does citronella work at all?:confused3

I absolutely am not meaning to be rude, but you live in Florida, I would think that the bugs wouldn't be any different at the Fort than where you are , :confused3 but from our experience , the bugs ain't too bad.

but I do believe in bug spray, my daddy usta believe in citronella, I'm not sure if it really works or not but we use it now and then.

I don't about that Frank, I have a friend who lives 30 minutes from WDW and had never heard of a yellow fly. She thought I was making it up. Until that is she visited me at the Fort. She quickly made the acquaintance of said fly.:rotfl:

Only good thing about them is, they are slow. Only fly I can hit in one swat.:)

I never notice them until the pain hits and I see a chunk missing out of my leg

I know I have visited friends at the Fort, and the skeeters, and gnats have been bad, but I live near Tampa, and there not really bad here?:confused3
LOL..I was just wondering , I Never visited at that time of the yr? LOL

I never heard of a yellow fly? I heard of green heads in NJ? Thats where I am from! :O)

I don't believe citronella or other open flame devices are legal at the Fort. I KNOW tiki torches are not.

THEY BITE?!?!?! I'm from Miami and I've never heard of them. We usually go to the Fort in the spring or the fall, but we're also going in June this year. I guess we'll see first hand what they're like. Are they like bees, where they leave you alone if you leave them alone? Or are they like the horse fly and mosquitos, where they don't care if you're just standing there minding your own business?

They are more like a fly or mosquito. They bite at will. And like PixieCamper said, you don't notice them until they take a bite. And yes it is a bite not a sting.

Don't care who they bite , hurts like crazy. Funnel cake Kathy ( as are many folk) is extremely allergic to the yeller fly bites,,for some they can make you sick.

I believe in bug spray.

Get a Thermacell! It runs on butane cartridges and will protect a 15-20 foot area around it and I swear by it! I live in a very bug prone area and with out my Thermacell we would get carried off!

In my experience the yellow fly doesn't show up until end of May, first of June and stay till near end of June. Or, that is when we experienced them there. In South Ga. it is generally the whole month of June! I will take the heat in July at the fort , rather than yellow flies in June. jmho
