Bugs in August

Having seen lots of people being bitten in this country over the past couple of weeks, it has reminded me to consider bug spray.

I have been searching on here to find a thread with info about bugs. It appears that they are more frequent around stagnant water and in the early morning and early evening.

What sort of bugs are there in August? :confused3 And does anyone know of a good repellent (as the only info I can find relates to US products)?

Thanks

I had never had a problem until last year, when I was literally eaten alive day after day. We were staying at POFQ, and CM's at the resort said it was because our room was near the water. They deep cleaned our room twice, changed all the bedding etc but it did no good. I was in agony. In the end we went to Walgreens and bought some repellent that the pharmacist there recommended. It was over 90% DEET and was the biggest relief I have ever encountered! Once I started applying that I did not get even one more bite during the rest of our stay!! The advise from the pharmacist was get the highest DEET you can find so that's the best advise I can give you. I haven't found anything like 90% in this country, so just do the best you can, and keep your eye out for something stronger over there if you have any problems!

They didn't bite my husband even once, so it all depends on how tasty they find you!! I am very yummy!!!!!!:rotfl2:

I will probably also take an anti histamine in liquid form for the kids as an emergency, just in case they get bitten.
I will get searching on the internet for DEET (90%)!!

Thanks

Just been bitten once in Orlando but our 1 day trip to Georgia got bitten about 15 times on my legs, probably because we were Geocaching and looking in a lot bushes, shrubs etc. Saw spiders as big as my hand. The mozzies got me. Suprised we don't get betten more in Orlando.

When we were there last August we didnt have too much trouble at all - I was bitten around 5 times in 2 weeks, but the rest of our group werent bitten at all.

I was always bitten while waiting for a bus - not sure what the bugs were.

I really recommend DEET too - I didnt have while in Orlando, but have used it in other countries, and it's brilliant stuff. I think they say to use DEET with caution on children, but you'd need to check that out. Some recommended restrictions on its use are out there. But we have used it with no problems whatsoever.

I can also suggest some stuff that may help soothe your bites if you are unlucky enough to get bit. From Walgreens I bought an aftersun gel called "solarcaine" and a hydrocortisone spray that was in the shape of a pen. they really helped soothe any bites I had.

Just do a Google search for Deet insect repellent 100 and it will bring up plenty of places you can get 100%Deet in this country.

You don't usually find it in on the shelves of supermarkets/Boots and the like as it's a more specialised product but it's easy to get hold of from places that supply gear for more adventurous holidays then your 2 weeks in Spain! lol

Well, I have been in June, July and August and NEVER had a bad bite, in over 10 weeks stay in total at WDW.

I'm not really sure why people have an issue, I didnt even know they had bad bug problems over in orlando.

Although, I have never stayed near large bodies of water, nor spent long times waiting in queues for buses. We stayed off site in rooms then suites, one time at the old Sheraton near SeaWorld (AWFUL hotel...) there was little pools of stagnant water, frogs and lizards, no bugs. Thought that was a bit odd.

Some tips I can maybe give,

Keep to air conned areas when out of the park?

Aim for rooms on a second or higher floor. We always had less things flying around when at elevation.

I always had a fan, which did come in handy one time when waiting for a bus. We had a small cloud of little flies (nothing major) and I used the fan to blow them away, it was quite amusing for the people in the line, but it did work!

I have never had to use bug spray, so I'm not sure how that works.

DEET is quite nasty stuff as it simply clogs your pores to stop you sweating and thus attracting insects. It makes your skin feel horrible and you cannot use it on children.
The best stuff to use - this may sound silly but as somebody who the infamous Scottish midge (worse than a mosquito) likes to feast on I feel that I am an expert - is Avon skin so soft. For whatever reason little biting insects do not like it's smell. You can buy a spray and it works a treat, it is used by walkers, fishermen and anyone who ventures outdoors up here.

only ever had a few mozzie bites last year, nothing problematic! Just used one of those pen type insect bite soothers and it was no problem.

Avon skin so soft is amazing. I've never used it anywhere but here (scotland) but, as sktf says, it keeps away the midges, and i'm pretty sure that if it keeps away them it'll keep away other bugs too :)

I'm a fan of Avon Skin So Soft too - the dry oil body spray. It doesn't make you smell like a can of insect spray either and it moisturises your skin. You can get it in the original (don't really like the smell too much) or the pink one which is much nicer. I have used it in Orlando and the bugs didn't touch us. I get bitten a whole lot more here in the summer time if I don't use it.

That Sounds Great :thumbsup2 and it won't cost as much either, just going to send a text to my Avon lady to put an order in.

Hope it works:worship:

When we went to Vero Beach I read on a thread that this was recommended to use because of the 'no see-ums', so we used it. We were all ok, but don't know if there were no bugs, or the spray worked!!!! :)
