Buena Vista palace ? or hotels on buena vista drive

We will be in orlando 7/08 for a dance competition. The hotel suggested is the Lake Buena Vista Palace on buena vista drive- looks like a nice hotel but $$$- we just need a clean bed and shower-

I was wondering if anyone else had any experience with this hotel or know of any others in the close vacinity. It looks like its located on the back side of Downtown.

Also we are planning on staying on a few extra days to enjoy Disney- We stayed at POP last year and enjoyed it- how far is POP from buena vista or would you give up EMH's and DDP and just stay on buena vista?

I thought I knew alot about the orlando area and now I've been thrown a curve- so I would appreciate any tips or advice.

BV Palace is on disney owned land but the hotels aren't owned by disney. Here is the site for all the Downtown Disney Area Hotels. All of them are withing walking distance to DTD. I would like at the Royal Palace or Grovesnor if you don't want to spend a ton of money.
