Budget trip to Washington DC

Any tips on getting these room rates that have been listed in this thread? I can not seem to get anywhere near these good rates.

Help please, thanks

Go on a weekend as the rates drop almost in half from weekday prices. :thumbsup2

been checking the week end rates and for the week end we want to go Oct 17 they are still ridiculous.

If we went this weekend they are less than half but fall break starts the 16th.

Just thought maybe I am missing something in the way of discounts.

Have you tried Hotwire or Priceline?

Fall Break? What's that? We only have a 3 day weekend for Columbus Day and the next day off is November 11th. What states get a Fall Break? :confused3

Hi all I need some help. My husband go laid off from his job and we already had a weekend trip planned for the middle of June, got hotel from priceline so its already pd for and no canceling. We had planned on going to the zoo which I think is free, any other budget friendly things to do for a family of 5?

It cost money but if you have the extra cash the Mueseum of crime and Punishment is SOOO worth it! Other fun things, The smithsonians. OH and go visit a fire station Cleveland park or Midnight Express are very cool. Oh and police officers will give you patches (like on the uniforms) for free if you ask nice (and tell um how cool there patches are). I got 3 patches last trip (metro police, regular police and hotel security) and all for free :)

We get a fall break and a spring break but our kids go back to the first of August not the first of Sept.

Not sure what other counties do in the state but that is how we do it. Don't know how or who sets your school calendar in NY state but I think all counties in the south set their own school calendar the state has nothing to do with it.

This is what is left this school year:

We get a 3 day week end the week of columbus day.

Fall Break is Oct 16-26

1/2 Oct 30

Then nothing until Thanksgiving 26-27

winter break Dec.17 - Jan 6

Jan 18 MLK day

Feb.12-16 Teacher in service and Presidents day

March 9 Teacher professional day no students

Spring Break April 2 - 11

May 26 last day of school

WOW! We get:

First Day of School: September 8th
Columbus Day Weekend
November 11th
Thanksgiving Weekend
Winter Break: Dec 24th - January 3rd
Mid-Winter Break: February 13th - 21st
Good Friday
Spring Break: April 17th - 25th
Memorial Day weekend
Last Day of School: June 24th

Some school stills take a traditional 2 week break at Easter, but then they don't have the week off in February. We went to WDW last year in October and wondered why all the kids were there. Some were from England which has a 2 week break in October, but didn't realize that schools in the US had a week off then, too. :cool2:

The zoo isn't free. A cheap family friendly restaurant is Queen Makeda, near 9th and U. The food is really amazing and not expensive.

i remember the zoo being free when we went. I see nothing on there website about price except for special events.

Really? It's been a few years since I went, but I could swear it was free. Have things changed?

The Zoo is free

per the website: http://nationalzoo.si.edu/Visit/default.cfm

Cost

Admission to the National Zoo is FREE. There is a fee for parking in Zoo lots, but FONZ members park for free! And the Zoo is accessible by Metrorail and Metrobus. See parking rates or join FONZ.

Thank you. I thought I remembered right. Though the zoo is free, it tends to cost in souviners if your kids are into that. I do remember they had little plastic (very nice quality) animals for under $3. I bought a ton of these when I was there for my classroom. Big hit, cheap souvineer. just make sure you do the zoo on a cooler day. We went when it was 89 and it was umm BAD, its all uphill (or so it seems) and well heat+ kids= crabby (at least here). Oh the best part? they have places that spray water if you want to get wet.

This tread is so helpful, I am going to need to read it again.:thumbsup2
