The word budget is subjective. What price range are you considering? And does the couple have any particular joint interests?

Depends on their ages, stages of household items. When we got engaged (21 years ago), one of the gifts we received was two aprons and a cookbook. The aprons are high quality (denim material), and we use them even today.

They are mid 20's both in a form of Law Enforcement and have different interests lol..I know very helpful haha

My brother was just engaged and they got a range of neat things at a small engagement party their friends threw them. She loves animals and one of her friends adopted her a penguin from the World Wildlife Fund. Not traditional but a cute idea. Others got them gift cards for a dinner out, someone else got them a toaster oven.
I think it really kind of boils down to their personalities and what they may or may not already have for their home.:)

We have a place near us that personalizes Christmas ornaments and they do mail order: http://www.christmasspiritshop.com/home.html

I just looked at their website - I didn't see any of the engagement specific ornaments (although they have a ton of wedding ones that are appropriate, too!). If you want engagement specifically, just call over to the store!

They're a great place, quality work. DH and I get ornaments for gifts from there all the time!

I second the Christmas ornament idea. My friend go SOOOOOOO many picture frames it was unbelievable. She absolutely loved my ornament b/c it was a unique idea. They also appreciated nice liquor and gift certificates.

Bronner's is a famous place that personalizes ornaments and it's where I got them their ornament. The one I got was a big diamond engagment ring w/their names and date of the engagement but I'm not finding it on the site right now. You could do one of these though!

What about a picnic basket? I got one for my birthday this last year and DH and I have used TONS of times! I think my grandma got it for me from Macy's, and it has plates, silverware, cups, etc., inside already :) They have picnic baskets in all price ranges, and if you think they'd enjoy a picnic, this would be a great thing!

Another cute idea is a personalized doormat with their married name on it! These can run anywhere from $20-$50 depending on where you get it from.

We got a personalized piggy bank for a couple of people one side said wedding fund with a bride and goom, wedding cake etc and the other side was a honeymoon fund with sun, palm tree etc. their names and date was on the top We added some $$ to start helping. I was told that is was one of the best gifts and now they give the same type of gift to their friends. Look on etsy

Check walmart.com

I think a bank for them to save money is a stellar idea!!! Have someone handpaint their first names on it. I'm pretty sure it's bad luck to have something made up with their married names, besides that's assuming the bride will be changing her name.

One of my fav gifts was a planner/organizer for wedding stuff. It had a budget sheet in it and helpful hints etc... Borders and or barnes and noble have them and I am sure you could google it and find some. It was perfect to have all my wedding stuff together.
