Our son has eczema during the winter months, and many of the body creams out there are expensive for over the counter. I have a prescription ointment, but need suggestions for his bath wash and moisturizers/creams I can use all day long (ointment is only 1x a day)

My son had bad eczema when he was younger. We used Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream in addition to his ointment. I also used the Soothing Bath Treatment by Aveeno Baby. It really made a difference. I always put the lotion on immediately after baths, and usually several times a days as well. It doesn't smell real great, but he loved it.

two of my children have had serious issues like this in the winter as well.
Our ped. suggested using Eucerin cream (not lotion or moisturizer) This is very thick and did a good job for us. (There are also generic / store brand versions of this product that have worked well for us.)
YMMV -- Hope you find something that works well for you!:goodvibes
Blessings.

My DD has eczema and her ped recommends Eucerin (sp?) for lotion and Aveeno for the hydro cream as well as their bodywash. She also suggested buying unscented shampoo/conditioner. (my DD is 9). So far it has worked well. Good luck!

Our dermatologist recommended Aquaphillic cream (not Aquaphor). They keep it behind the counter at the pharmacy. A $10 tub truly lasted us years and both of my boys have skin issues.

My dd7 had problems as a baby and still does. We have had success with Eucerin cream. Walmart makes a generic that costs much less and works just as well. For the bath, we use Cetaphil.

My 4 yr old has had severe eczema his entire life, including on his face in the winter. We used to use Eucerin or aquaphor but hated the greasy feeling.

Started trying different lotions and the one that works well for him is Curel Ultra Healing. I rub it on his entire body morning and night and after a bath. It works better for him than the aforementioned products and it is cheaper!

Good luck finding the right product.

I have found for my kids that the key was applying 3-4 times a day. Once I did that I saw results in just a couple of days. Also, a humidifier or vaporizer to put some moisture in the air was helpful.

Our pediatrician said the best and cheapest thing is vaseline, but it's messy. Our baby just needs it on his legs, so I only use it when he's wearing long pants or at bedtime.

My dd8 has eczema and our dr said to use Dove soap in the bath. Even the Walmart or Target brands have worked really well for her. For cream, we've used Eucerin and got the best results. Just a little bit at a time to cover the area. Good luck!

1% hydrocortizone cream/ointment works for my 6 month old. You can get it pretty cheap when it's on sale at Walgreens.

My 4yr old ds has eczema (due to food allergies, grass and dog) since he was 4mo old. Right now it's pretty much under control even though it's winter and very cold and dry. His gets worse in the spring through fall and we just got the grass and dog diagnosis so we at least now know what triggers it for him and why it's worse at those times of the year when all we read is it should clear up in summer and be worse in winter. His allergiest recommended Dove liquid soap for his baths and Lubriderm for after. I still like the California Baby skin care line best though, the everyday lotion is nut/soy/dairy/gluten-free and non-greasy but very moisturizing. Their calendula diaper cream comes in a small tub and has multiple uses, I used it for eczema and also it's great to have on hand for burns. The key is to very lightly pat off excess water after the bath and then slather on the lotion, but not to layer it with the Rx ointment like I had been doing. That seems to help keep my ds' skin hydrated.

Check out Alburtis Soap works add the . com. My friend (whom is also a dis'r, owns it). I think she started making her own soap etc due to her baby having this. It is all natural....email her, she will be able to tell you about it.

For excema treatment, our 2 year old's dermatologist prescribed a ointment. But for general moisturizing, she said she could give us a list of products to use, but what worked best for her own kids was vegetable shortening. You know like the thick, white kind in the tub? You certainly can't get more budget than that! It's greasy, but for our 2 year old, it worked.

It may also help to switch your laundry detergent. It really helped my oldest when we switched to any of the detergents/dryer sheets with no scents. The brand did not matter, I use both Tide and All, depending on the sale.

It is not necessarily the most budget-friendly, but our doctor highly recommends the Cetaphil line of skin products. Also, we were advised to not use any fabric softener or dryer sheets on her clothes.

My opinion - Eucerin cream (in the tub) is excellent. I agree that generic versions of this are also equally excellent (Walgreens has in addition to others mentioned - often half the price and they sometimes have buy one get one free sales). Vaseline and Aquaphor are certainly greasy, but effective barriers to retain moisture, which is a primary goal. Vegetable shortening, such as Crisco or store brand, is also quite effective and cheap, but also greasy. Possibly you could use one of the cheaper "greasier" products at night, and save the "good stuff" for day use? When creams are applied just after a bath, even more moisture can be trapped inside. Products with fragrance may cause additional irritation.

I also suggest that you review with your Pediatrician his or her recommended frequency for use of any steroid creams or ointments (ie, hydrocortisone) since overuse may be harmful. Just a thought...

My aunt uses Cortizone Ointment not cream and it has worked wonders for my cousin. It's over the counter and I am sure you can find a generic one.
