Budget Buster of the Month

As May draws to a close I was wondering who else has had a bad month. Something that you didn't expect or did but still didn't want to pay. It doesn't matter if it's big or small. I'll start.

My first one is paying the deductible to get the car fixed after a hit and run. It irritates me because it never should have happened. We were in the turn lane at an intersection and some idiot waves someone out of the gas station who turns right into us then drives off. Ugh...

My second one is minor but really makes me mad. My husband went out the door for work this morning and noticed that someone had broke our lamppost. So now have to fix that and clean glass out of the yard all because of vandals. The police officer that lives up the block had his potted plants smashed in his front yard. Thankfully we just put a padlock on the water hydrant that is next to the lamppost, so it was turned on or anything.

Anyone else have a budget vent that they would like to get out?

On May 10th, I got hit by really heavy hail on the way home from work ($6000 worth of damage). Meanwhile, a tornado hit the house, split a tree in half that fell on our carport that landed on our other vehicle. I had to take a few days off work, we had to rent a car for a few days (no insurance rental coverage), and have paid 2 deductibles and would be paying a third if we didn't know someone that can fix the minor damage to one of our vehicles.

Fun month!

Lets see over $1800 to have my van fixed and then another $200 to rent a car for a week. Now the air conditioning in the house has just quit. No one can come out until Tuesday so I guess that can go on June's budget busters. The plus side we payed off 3 credit cards :cool1: and only have 3 more to go.

:scared1::scared1:

 Best wishes as you deal with all of that.

I hit a deer. We only had to pay $100.00 deductible, but thats still $100.00 I would rather save. Our auto and homeowners insurance raised by $950.00 per year. We got the bill last week. Needless to say we are shopping around.

Our lawn mower got busted so we had to get a new one for $567 and then got a dental bill for my husband for $440 and that's with double coverage for services that were done last year and had to be paid within the next 10 days or we would be sent to a collection agency but they never sent a bill until now. So there goes $1000 and now the mortgage is due on 6/1. Oyy glad we had some money set aside and didn't have to dip too far into savings.

Last year we had a few unexpected budget busters and the trend continues this year only they are getting more expensive!

First was our dog needing surgery for a torn ACL.....:scared1: He had the surgery a few weeks ago and goes in soon for his follow up (at an extra charge of course!)

Just this week we went to use our central air and once again we are having mechanical problems with it. It's been a lemon since it was installed and warranties are now expired but even with them often times the labor was extra and we are leaning towards just getting a new unit.

The two combined will really hit our savings/emergency fund hard so I am hoping for a few quieter months to rebuild.

We needed new brake pads for one of the cars and the compressor on our A/C needed to be replaced. Both necessary, but it still stinks and stuff always happens at the same time it seems :headache:

$900 in unplanned repairs to my SUV .

$400 for unplanned computer purchase (home PC bit the dust):surfweb:.

$249 dentist bill for DH (kinda knew it was coming, but he needs over $1600 of work done and that is w/ insurance!):headache:.

$160 in medical co-pays for DS for Dr. visit, specialist visit, ER copay, new med... and he needs surgery next month :sad2:. BUT, the issues he is having are all going to be resolved easily and are not life threatening... there are so many people who struggle way harder than us. I've been trying to look at the positive. A bad budget month just makes us appreciate it more when we have a good month, right? :worship:

Gee, let's see:

Car: $800
Dog: $1800 (two ear infections and a possible sprained ligament in the knee)
AC: don't know how much yet
Teeth: $1600
Unexpected Graduation expenses: $200

Last month my Amex Bill was astronomical. Granted, it had the car insurance payment on it as well as vacation expenses which were budgeted for, but it was more than 3 times what I usually spend in a month. I am seriously freaking.

Did I mention I have a vacation planned for the end of June and my DD is starting college in the fall (for which it looks like I am paying pretty much full price)? :scared1:

Yeah, after the vacation, I think we will all eat nothing but rice and beans for the next 4 years. ;)

Wow, Punkin.... we must go to the same car repair place and the same dentist! The prices are almost identical.:lmao:

Hope your dog is feeling better... we had one of those bills last summer for our Yorkie.

WOW it was a bad budget month!!

training class $1500
new fridge $810
birthday $35
mother's day $60
wedding shower $25
new camera $90
issue with rental car reservation (long story... didn't cost anything, but I lost my great deal of $126 for a week in October! wah!)

Here's to a better June!!

...oh wait, I forgot that we also replaced the dishwasher which went 3 months ago ($850) but that was actually saved up for - that is not an emergency in my book. I also ordered (and paid for) a new micro (which went the same time as the dishwasher) but it has not come in yet.

:headache:

For all of you with really large amounts,. May was Nickle/Dime Mom to death month. One thing after another. Can I have this, you forgot I had to pay this, but Mom everyone got one of these, Darn, I don't feel like cooking in the heat;), can we have ice cream, please, please, please??

It was so bad that I am embarrassed to go back to the no buy May thread. I am hiding out til June comes along!:rotfl2:

Count us in this club.

Repairs for the Jeep part 1 $350
Repairs for the Jeep part 2 (waiting to hear - at the shop now)
Lost credit card dispute with Doubletree Washington DC $226 (they charged our card for a stay that we cancelled and we lost the dispute)
Listing our home in MD with a property manager $895
Paying a half month rent in June just to secure a rental home in GA $700

Plane tickets home to help plan my father's memorial service, plus prepaid rental car: $750ish

Plane tickets home for the actual service a few weeks later (long story): so far $340, and I still need to buy another one way ticket and get a rental car (but that will probably hit the June budget)

Daughter's 10th birthday: about $100 over what I had originally planned - I had just given up the fight by that point to be honest.

So it's looking to be about $1200 over budget this month. And the bleeding will probably continue well into next month when I actually do all the travelling I bought the plane tickets for.

I'm just trying to get to July when things should quiet down again...

End of school-year expenses -- nickel and dimed to death.

A/C capacitor: $300.

SHOES -- new dress shoes for rapidly growing DS13 and DD8, new ballet shoes for both DDs, new jazz shoes for DD10, DH needs new water sandals for an adventure trip next month, I bought some Teva Mush to try based on great reviews from this board:rolleyes:.

I just got the paperwork for DS's marching band expenses in the fall.:scared1: That will be a budget buster.

So I guess May has been a bad month for a lot of people. While I hate that others have had to lose extra money, I am glad to know that I am not alone. Thanks to everyone who has replied so far! :grouphug:

And here's to June being a better month!:)

Last month was a pretty bad month for us

birthday-$125

get AC recharged with freon $430

easter-$150 (we got my twin neices an easter basket since my sister couldnt afford one and we also got them easter dresses)

this month the only budget buster was that we sent my other sister $100 for food since they cut down her food stamps (she got that fixed though) and she called me crying cause she didnt have much food for her and my neice. she is pregnant to. so she got to spend $100 on food. but i wouldnt really call that a "buster" cause she is my sister.
