I've read so much about this lately, it is definitely going on the list...however, it will have to be for another trip down the road bc I am overbooked in June already!R had one request on our long weekend, meal-wise, and that was the breakfast buffet at The Wave. This is a favorite of mine as well, so I had NO trouble obliging! I made a reservation and we made our way over to a very quiet breakfast conveniently located just off the lobby of the Contemporary Resort.
Uh, huh...likely story.I tried to just get one or two crispy pieces but they were all stuck together.
Everything really looks good.I loved the cheese grits and potato casserole, the mickey waffle, and the pancakes. Everything else was good but I didn't get seconds of those.
Good to know!Oh, and the coffee here was also excellent!
This looks and sounds wonderful! This was like a flourless chocolate cake. I don't mean that in the allergy-friendly sense, but in the decadent fudgy sense. It was SO good. This was the perfect portion since it was so chocolatey - you got plenty but not too much of the rich fudgy perfection.
Sounds great, as well! I want to try some of their seasonal cupcakes! We will stop by one day on our way back to WL for our midday break.R went for a cream horn, which was light and fresh and just sugary flaky happiness for him.
This sounds yummy, also!R had the Contempo Smokehouse Burger - "Angus Chuck Burger, Smoked Bacon Marmalade, Fried Onion Ring and Cheddar on a Brioche Bun served with French Fries" ($12.49)
On the way back to the room I stopped in Roaring Forks and sprung (one snack credit) for the... FANFARE.... Magic Cookie Bar! Holy moly magic is right. R picked up a couple packs of those delicious cinnamon sugar glazed almonds. I don't know what the individual totals were but the total before applying the three snack credits was $14something.
True to my usual predilections, I had a Wedge salad ($13 - Iceberg, pecan smoked bacon, blue cheese, heirloom tomatoes, and red onions). This was standard but delicious and I had no trouble polishing it off.
The plan paid $102.24 for our meal. I wouldn't mind going back to the Boathouse but I would choose from the sandwiches and baskets and adjust my expectations. The Boathouse seems to suffer from an identity crisis - is this an upscale seafood signature? Or a family style, dockside location with hearty sandwiches and fried baskets? We saw some of both and I have heard excellent things about all parts of the menu, so I am willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. However, they do not accept Tables in Wonderland here, so it might be a while before we go back.
I was a little heartbroken over our entrees. I don't know if it was because the restaurant was slammed on New Year's Eve or what, because I have seen so many positive reviews of the Flying Fish reboot, but I did not enjoy our meal and it was extremely expensive for the quality of the food we had. If I had been paying out of pocket I think I would have complained about the quality of the entrees and I felt a little duped as I was looking forward to a heavenly filet and got basically a bad sirloin. There are just too many good signature options around Disney property for me to come back to Flying Fish any time soon. In fact, had I known how bad Flying Fish would prove to be, I would have had a steak at the Boathouse and eaten appetizers as my entree at FF.
Another favorite of our server, who assured us this could be cut with a butter knife. Unfortunately we had to actually put her challenge to the test since she disappeared without getting us a steak knife. You could actually cut this with a butter knife but there are a lot of things I COULD cut with a butter knife - that doesn't mean you should.
Disney was genius in installing an "all poutine all the time" food kiosk. The fries are constantly frying up fresh and the cast members were busy worker bees assembling all this goodness. Speaking of which, we had the Classic Poutine - "French Fries, Beef Poutine Gravy and Cheddar Cheese Curds" ($8.49). This is a substantial snack! But really tasty. I have never had real Canadian poutine but this was a great guilty indulgence. How can you go wrong with salty gravy and rich cheese curds atop fresh cooked, crisp but fluffy steak fries?
Gotta love that DVC savings! That's what got me hooked to start with, and this year I got a windfall renting points (that's the easiest way to explain it). By the time this year is over I will have paid about $3500 for 18 nights of stays that would have been about $11,500 rack rate. That's insane!Oh yeh, that is hefty! Crazily enough, bc I'm renting points, we are staying for less than $200 a night.
Me too, friend, meeeee tooI like alcohol with my meals, and as snacks...lol.
It will be worth it, no matter the cost! Actually drinks are what convinced me to purchase TIW again this year since so many great places are offering 20% discounts via annual passes. I think the TIW is paying itself off...I'm a little worried about what my drink costs will be in June...lol.
We did have an amazing and VERY BIG time! Sanaa is great for dinner too - I am actually glad myself that the Tandoori chicken wasn't all I remembered, since we mainly get over to Sanaa at dinner or during the post-dinner lounge only hours. It's still at the top of my favorites list!Dang lady, you guys went big! But hey, that's what a bucket list/NYE trip is for, right? I know you had misses on a couple of meals but it really did look like an amazing time overall
I am secretly glad that you didn't absolutely love your lunch at Sanaa because I ended up switching our plans and we're now having dinner there instead of lunch, so I was bummed that I wasn't going to be able to have that tandoori chicken sandwich again. Hearing that it wasn't as incredible as you'd remembered makes me feel better, LOL. Still sounds like it was a great lunch and a nice way to end your trip!
It was really expensive and I wouldn't ever do it again (Not that I have the opportunity now!) but it was worth it once and we had an amazing luxurious time!!!Yikes so expensive! (Especially for the meals you didn't really like). But sometimes it's nice to treat yourself every once in awhile and it sounds like it worked out well for NYE.
You're dang skippy we did the darn thing!I really loved your report! It was spendy, but I mean, you DID THE THING. Go big or go home is what I say
Yeah, this. I find myself stuck in an orbit of repeating visits to the signatures that have proven themselves to be stars. I also sort of see entrees in a similar light as signature restaurants - I am more likely to pick a few apps because if one is a fail I haven't put all my eggs in that basket. Sort of a weird comparison but I like to stick to my apps and lounges and do a mix of standard restaurants, qs, and sparingly revisit those great signatures!I think i expect more from Signatures (rightfully so) so I'm more likely to be disappointed.
Yes please do a dining report!!! It's funny that even after deciding that the dining plan doesn't really work for us I started trying to do math to see whether to add it to our October trip. Disney really knows how to market that thingNext month we're going OOP and I'm really curious to know how we end up. DH and I have high drink bills too so I'm thinking if we just go to a restaurant and order the way we want to (couple apps, split an entree and dessert) I think we'll end up better off. I like the idea of eating at lounges too. I'm certain I could live off Crews Cup truffle fries. Maybe I'll do another dining report or something to see.
Ain't that the truth! As to all of it. I love your reports for the same reason. "We all went skipping down mainstreet holding hands with Mickey" just doesn't help others plan their vacations so it's good to have some honesty on the boards to counteract all those gorgeous families with no problems and no lines on the planning DVDs...I don't think you should apologize for coming off negatively in some of your reviews (which I don't think you did; you were being honest). First, nobody reads reviews to read lies lol. The majority if not all of us honestly want to know when we read these dining reports how people felt about where and what they ate, you know that! I also agree that more should be expected of signature meals, Disney or not. If something is a service issue it IS more annoying because that IS easily fixed and is just our bad luck to get that server I enjoyed this report as much as your past ones! But damn you guys spent a lot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ this time
Um. Yeah. GET THERE! I hate that they changed the name to drop the "G" off of Homecomin(g) - that screams gimmick to me - but the food is so worth repeat visits! This is what I'm dying to get at Homecoming I was feeling ok with cancelling our lunch ADR there next month but now you made me sad. Have to seriously consider making one for our May trip........
I can't wait to try Dluxe. I am a burger addict so I really can't believe we haven't been there yet. Soon!DLuxe Burger is so good you should definitely try it when you can!
Mhm I can't wait to go back to Homecoming
Love it. That's totally how I justify the expenses...Oh math! To be fair, I think that some folks forget how much you have to tip with all those TS meals! Sounds like an awesome splurge to be honest. I guess it evens out, since you "saved" a similar amount with the dining plan, right?! Disney Math!!!
I feel the same way! It's modern disney magic, for sure.Sanaa is my happy place. I went for lunch when I was down there for work two weeks ago, and it was just so wonderful. It never lets me down. The wine is always good and the food is just so good and such a value and I love the animals. Can you tell I like that place?!
OMG I hope you had the best ever time! tell me you're writing a trip and/or dining report? How was Narcoossee's? I can't wait to return to the Grand6 days! I'm 8 days away from a Grand Floridian stay! I'll be the woman with identical twin blonde boys drinking champagne and eating lobster sliders by the pool (I might have been visualizing this moment--it better be awesome). We are trying the Narcoseees brunch, which you said wasn't great. I'm a little nervous, but I'm hoping that an opening time reservation and twin boys will encourage our waiters to be a little quicker, and I will be armed with lots of sticker books in case it's slow!
Oh, and that ice cream sandwich is on my immediate must do list!
Ah, my hard work paid off! I love writing these reports to relive the trip and extend the happy memories but I also hope it helps crazy OCD planners like myself so I am glad you liked the reviews and the math. And yes both Homecomin(g) and Sprinkles are must-do! I am starting to wonder if we will do anything other than eat when we go next time...Thanks for the great reviews and breaking down the costs. A nice perspective on the ultimate dining plan Disney use to have. I so want to eat at Homecoming, I wish we were able to try it this past trip but we could not fit it in. It is on the must do list for next trip. I didn't even know Sprinkles served the ice cream sandwich, looks so delicious!
Yeah, it was a crazy expensive trip but it truly checked off SO many things from my wish list and I will always have the memories!Wow, that is a lot of math and some very high numbers but as you said it was a once in a lifetime experience and great you got to try it before it went away. Considering all you got to do and eat you most definitely came out ahead
Love the last lunch at Sanaa. Its always one of our favorites too. Though I've never tried the salads, will have to add that to the list.
Totally enamored with your progressive Disney Springs experience. We finally got to do something similar on our last trip and it didn't not disappoint. And like you Homecoming was the clear favorite
It is a REALLY good thing I didn't know about the Empanadas when we stayed at CSR! I could eat mexican every meal and be happy. I was really pleased with the QS options at La Cantina. Yes, it was just theme park food, but it was really tasty. I loved CSR - can't wait to see how the tower and new restaurant(s) change things over there in a few years! Those sliders and empanadas look so good! I think I had similar empanadas at CSR and I liked them a lot. I loved the nachos at La Catina when I had them too.
I am not normally a flavored-anything liquor person but occasionally Disney proves me wrong! I just can't get enough of the service, drinks, and food at Nomad. My friend and I were there last weekend (gosh, was it only last weekend) after ROL - we basically raced from the theater to Nomad - and had a great time even though we basically ordered at last call. Our server was ADORABLE. So far we are 2/2 for great servers there - Alexandra and Spencer areThe drinks (excluding the Banana Rum) and the food at Nomad look great! And the Mexican food looks good, too. Yum!
Yes! I am admittedly a Nomad Lounge fangirl at this point but how can you beat a tasty drink like that? And it was $8.50... half the beer in Disney World is at least that price so that's a steal for a cocktail!Loving all these bonus review. Keep 'em coming!
Just read the description of that gin drink from Nomad Lounge to my husband and his jaw literally dropped. That's right up his alley, and now we're trying to figure out how to squeeze in a stop here...
Let's all say it together - Ariane was right!Uh-huh, no surprise to me that the magic bar won best snack for you! Can't wait to get a few later this month lol!
Double jealous! Also think I'll be trying the Lamu Libation when we eat at Tiffin's, that sounds right up my alley
I hope that your schedule permits it. I just saw another glowing review from Ashley (@Vernie822) and wishing that was what I was having for breakfast any time soon. I am actually fantasizing about the fruit cup - how weird is that? The grits and pancakes and mickey waffles and and and... yum!Good to see another review of the Wave breakfast as right now we're planning to do that this month (ok, technically as I type it's still next month for about an hour) but I was considering dropping it just for time/full stomach reasons. I'm going to wait until the last possible minute b/c it looks SO good and I really love breakfast........
I posted some photos in the Disney Food Pics Part 5 forum but I will say (just in case I don't get started on my review early enough) that our favorites were the Carne Asada and Shrimp and Grits (from Florida Fresh I think) and the German potato pancake with ham and onions were tops. And do I need to even say anything about the La Vie en Rose slush at France? Don't let me down, fellow slush devotee. Get like 5.Have a great trip! I'll be looking for some of your F&G food booth reviews before we hit them at the end of the month!
Thank you, Teresa! SO glad you read along. I am also glad Sprinkles had something GF that fit your requirements AND was super tasty! I shouldn't have even posted about that ice cream sandwich because now thinking about it is just torture!Great updates! Thank you! We've not been to Homecoming yet, and can't wait to go! We did do D-Luxe Burger on our most recent trip, and we loved it! Can't wait to hear what you think of it. I don't eat gluten due to an auto-immune disease I have, and had the red velvet gluten free cupcake from Sprinkles. Mind you, I'm not a sweet person by any stretch of the imagination, and usually steer clear of all gluten free bread/pizza dough/cakey products, but this cupcake was so amazing that I dream about having another! Would love to try that oatmeal cookie ice cream sandwich though! Looking forward to your next report!
Thanks, friend!!! Glad I confused myself into inviting you over (come on Renee, we have strawberry cupcakes... )Great finish! I enjoyed the report and will be watching for the next!
Yeah Justin! Now that you guys are closer I am sure you will end up doing all of the "that" and "that" even if it's spread out over more trips. I love being in driving distance so we can do lots of long weekends like you guys are! Warning: it will make all of your friends, acquaintances, and strangers think that you have really gone off the deep end when you are going once every couple months (well, those that don't already think we are crazy for even going to Disney at all as childless adults) but it is SO WORTH IT to get a small dose of magic every season. Gotta love DVC!I. Am. So. Behind. But OMG, I am just drooling over everything you ate.. seriously the Platinum plan sounds like a dream! My husband sat next to me while I was reading this going "can we do that" "and that"
Sooooo good. We may have to go over to check out Geyser Point next trip simply to see if they have these amazing creations.YUM!! I have had these at various family get togethers and such but have never tried the WDW version.. it looks magical.
Yeah... I don't get it. But I don't have to! At least it gives us lots of things to go back to try.OK, THANK YOU!! I have been thinking this for months. Like so many people say it's so great for an easy lunch for their baskets, sliders, etc. And then you also have your more upscale dishes.. which I'm just not sure of, although I'm sure it's great. Identity crisis for sure.
Yes, my fellow old lady friend, come over to the oatmeal cookie dark side. I'm still going to try that Ample Hills oatmeal cookie flavor but this is my benchmark for an oatmeal/ice cream dessert...Maybe THIS is what I'm missing about Sprinkles. I was just there and tried ice cream instead of a cupcake this time. But those cookies sounded sooooo delicious.
Thank you so much! It was wonderful remembering all the fun we had. Thank you for reading along! We had a great time at Flower and Garden and now I can't wait to go back!!I thoroughly enjoyed your trip report! It was so entertaining and informative. Thank you so much for sharing. I hope you have a fab time a Flower and Garden.
Thank you, so glad you read them! I had a great time writing this review!!!Great reviews. I enjoyed following along!
Well I think after all the shenanigans over the last year and the stress of your mom's diagnosis and everything else going on you absolutely deserve a lot of drink samples! I've been reading your PTR updates but having problems commenting. Sending lots of hugsI'm so glad you posted this report. I have some of the same ADRs and it's always nice to see updated reviews.
And I have notes for a lot of drinks to try........
LOL that is totally something we would call it. It was really an adventure! Maybe they will bring it back in a different incarnation, but it was a real gateway drug since I now I want to do all the REST of the tours we didn't get to do based on the holiday schedule reducing tour availability... And thank you for reading! Thanks so much for sharing your amazing experience. I'm sad to hear they did away with the Platinum Plan. We always referred to it as "the elope with Minnie plan" and had it as a some day, some how, pipe dream.
I am nothing if not a dichotomy of signature dining and cheap fast food Thanks for reading along with me! Gotta get going on that report for my long weekend I guess. A bit afraid to post it since it was mainly a liquid nourishment experienceHad to giggle a little at the juxtaposition of all the amazing meals you had this trip and needing chicken nuggets before you left
Thanks for the amazing food porn and all the trip details. Truly a trip of a lifetime. Can't wait to hear about your weekend
We found them in Roaring Forks, which is sadly in a construction hiatus at the WIlderness Lodge at the moment. I suspect that these yummy treats may be available at the Geyser Point over there but I'm not 100% sure. I will be happy to go on an investigative expedition to find them, however...Great report!! Since it was pages ago, where do you find the Magic Cookie Bar and the Pecan Bun???
Yeah Justin! Now that you guys are closer I am sure you will end up doing all of the "that" and "that" even if it's spread out over more trips. Haha...I'm glad you confused yourself also! I truly enjoyed it!Glad I confused myself into inviting you over (come on Renee, we have strawberry cupcakes... )
