Our party of 5 had lunch today at the Brown Derby, paying OOP with TiW. We were seated within a few minutes of our ADR time.
Requested and got a booth, but it was all downhill from there, compared to previous times dining there. My son ordered the corn bisque. The "food bearer" literally dumped it on the table in front of him, without a soup spoon. There were no spoons of any kind in the flatware set-up. We called to his departing back for a spoon. He nodded once, and kept on going. More than 5 minutes later our waiter showed up. We again asked for a spoon. The waiter said he would bring it, but stopped to deliver drinks, take an order, and clear some items before going for the spoon.
We were all drinking iced tea or soft drinks, and all of them were empty by this time. Other food bearers showed up with food -- the duck for me and DH, the steak for DS, and two kids grilled chicken breasts for the 13 year old DD and friend. Both of them had requested fries, but the dish came out with a different type of potato. The food bearer said he'd send fries right out, but did not do so.
I found the duck really tough to cut...it came with venison sausage that was much more tender. The food deliverer also did not come back with steak knives, as requested by me, DH, and DS. Nearly 5 minutes later, the waiter came back, and did manage to get steak knives out. I had to ask him to refresh drinks...in fact asking him to come back when he dropped the knives off, but did not ask if we needed anything else. We asked for the french fries, and he said that the kitchen was driving him crazy, and that they had run out of steaks, and pork, and french fries, and that things were really disorganized. He managed to appear with some (nearly cold) fries after the girls had finished all of their chicken. The broccoli on their plates was cold and basically raw as opposed to being even lightly steamed. Neither my DH nor I thought the duck had been prepared in the way intended by the recipe. It was so tough it was difficult to chew. My DS said the steak was amazing. Once he got his knife he was happy.
We ordered dessert...the banana toffee tower, the cheesecake, and the chocolate cake the girls shared were all extraordinary. And the waiter did manage to refill DS's coffee.
We strongly pointed out to the waiter that the spoon arrived nearly 10 minutes after the soup and took two requests, and that the fries also took two requests. He again blamed the kitchen for being crazy and disorganized. We suggested that he point out that utensils should arrive with the food. If it had been me, I would have taken the soup off the menu, or comped a dessert, but we were charged full price for all items.
Over all, it was the most disorganized and incoherent meal we've had here on disney property. My son didn't want to raise a scene by sending the soup back. And I was afraid that if I sent the duck back we'd be there all afternoon. Before TiW, the bill was nearly $200, for which one expects a soup spoon...
My DH and I ate at Jiko a couple of nights ago. The service and the food was impeccable. If you have a choice on where to spend your signature dining credits, I'd think twice about Brown Derby, unless we just had a freakishly bad experience.
