So i just got my embroidery machine!! YEAH!! I'm so excited!!
I found a card on Ebay of some adorable Lady and the Tramp designs! Perfect for our VR on DCL next year. So i bought them, and i got it, and it's not a card. It's a CD. Am i missing something here?? how am i supposed to use a CD.
You need to purchase a special box (around $200) that converts the designs/saves the designs to your card. They also won't work if they are too large (usually must be 4x4 for a Brother) or if they are in the wrong format.
If you don't want to get that involved then you need to make sure you purchase designs specifically on cards and specifically the size and format for your machine.
If I were you, I'd take the cd to a commercial embroiderer (check your phone book for monogramming/embroidery services) and have them do it. It will be a lot cheaper in the long run.
you mean i can take the CD to the local embroidery store, and they can transfer it to a card that will work on my machine, without having to pay the $200 for the box?
No. I mean you'll take them your design and they'll stitch it for you. The card(s) that came with your machine are specific to your machine and are probably not the re-writeable type. The re-writable cards are those that work with the box, permitting you to temporarily have a design on the card that your Brother can read and then stitch. Think of them as translators. You have to buy cards that already have designs on them, in the format that your Brother takes.
So unless you buy the box and a blank/re-writable card that your machine can read you cannot use those designs on the CD. BUT you MAY be able to pay the commercial embroiderer to stitch them for you as their machines probably stitch multiple formats AND/OR they have the converter box/card.
That is your best bet since you're leaving in two weeks (right?). By the time you invest in the box, cards, etc. you'll have two Lady/Tramp shirts that cost you several $100 each... Plus the learning curve in using the machine and the box if you go ahead and invest... I just checked the price and they are $399 now. Ouch.
I know that's not good news. But, seriously, I'd save the $, time and effort and see if you can have your designs stitched by a commercial place. I doubt they'll charge very much (probably less than $20 for both shirts).
That will allow you to transfer the design to the card so that you can use it on your machine (assuming that the design that you bought is in the .pes format).

Buy this!! You will use it over and over again. I use mine all the time. If you ever want to download FREE designs from the internet you will need this. It is very easy to learn.
Enjoy your new toy! I love mine. It was the best investment ever!

I also have a brother embroidery machine. I use something called the Mini Magic box. It may cost around $150 - $200, included is the blank design card for the machine. You copy the design from the CD to the Design Card.
It is well worth the investments. I know of a great board , like Disboards, that people exchange ideas, answer questions, and share free designs.
Fell free to PM or email me on any simple questions. I only know the basics but use the bulletin boards to get answers.
We are attemping to try the 1st mickey design on the machine, his basic head profile. We start with the white, for his eyes and little bit on his ear. works fine. then we switch to red for his tounge. that's where we are running into problems. It is picking up the thread from the lower bobbin and all we are getting is white with a tiny little red line. We have adjusted the bobbin tension, but it isn't fixing the problem. We don't need to change to lower bobbin color every time we change the top thread cassett, do we?? I thought we could basically just use a basic white for the lower bobbin all the time?
I always use white for my bobbin. It is your tension, but check that there is nothing in the bobbin casing. Even a tiny thread will effect it. Have you adjusted your bobbin tension (requires opening that plate on the arm where the bobbin sits)?
The whole thing is just a learning curve and getting to know your machine. But if you can't fix it in time for your trip then you actually could change out the bobbin thread color to get the appearance right.
