I think I broke my little toe today. I stubbed it on the corner of a shelf, and it hurts like there is no tomorrow!

Has anyone ever broken their toe before? If so what did the doctor tell you? I've NEVER seen any part of my body bruise this fast and this purple ever before!

My mom told me that the doctor can't really do anything about a broken toe...but I'd like a second opinion? What do you think?

Your mom is right... There's really nothing they can do for you that you can't do for yourself. I've broken both of my little toes over the years. The first time, I was in college and made my roommate take me to the ER. All they did was tape it to the next one and send me on my way (after 4 1/2 hrs. and God knows how much $$ later!). The next time, (funny - it was 12 years later and my old roommate happened to be visiting at the time!) I broke the little toe on the other foot but I just taped it myself and put ice on it for a while.

I sympathize... I know it hurts so bad!!! And it turns purple so fast, you think it's going to explode or something. I would just tape it up and take some Advil. It will hurt for a few days, but then it should start feeling a bit better.

:D

Oh no:( I have broked my toe several times. I am a total klutz and always walking into things. Yep, tape it up and keep it elevated. I had to wear those goofy open toed shoes too:o

I broke my little toe on November 19th, I remember the day because it was a day before my birthday!

There isn't a darned thing that can be done either. I wasn't completely back to normal (normal meaning wearing all of my shoes comfortably) for about 5 weeks! I couldn't wear my clogs at all! The only shoes that I could wear that didn't hurt like heck were my sneakers. The swelling wasn't completely gone for more like two months.

The underneath of my toe and the surrounding areas were some of the prettiest shades of purple I've ever seen!

If you don't mind the feeling, try getting some medical tape and tape it to the next toe over.

Other than that, you'll just have to deal with it!

I once broke 3 toes and my whole foot turned black. My mother made me go to the hospital. The dr. x-rayed them, said yup they're broken, and sent me on my way. So your mom is right, don't bother going to the dr. Like others have said, you can tape it up to keep it from hurting so much.

tricia.

All I've heard you can do for a broken toe is do like the others said-tape it to one of the toes next to it, take some advil, and try to stay off the foot (prop it up) as often as possible. I hope it stops hurting soon.

Ouch! I stubbed my pointer finger toe (I don't think it is called a pointer finger toe...but you know which one I mean:teeth: ) on the end of the bed when we were on vacation in Aruba. The next morning it was swollen and hurt like heck. My DH went to the lobby store and bought medical tape and wrapped it up with my big toe. Oh the pain! I feel for you!

I broke the toe next to my little toe a week before my daughter was due. In my clumsy pregnant state, I was trying to get the cat out of the pantry, tried to move him with my foot and smacked it into the wall. My foot actually turned black from the bruise! It was GIANT! It swelled up bigger than I'd ever seen it, and I couldn't wear a shoe for a good two weeks. I couldn't move around on crutches because I was pregnant.

My toe is crooked now :) Ah, memories!

I didn't even think about having to wear other shoes! OMG! What in the world am I going to do about shoes! I have to "dress up" twice a week for observations! There is NO way I can go in sneakers! LOL! I may have to go look for a pair of flats a size bigger than my own.

Thanks so much guys for everything!

Important thing with taping next to the other toe: put a little cotton between the toes or the sweat could break down the skin. Use hard soled shoes to walk on, if possible find someone that possibly got a wooden shoe for a broken toe. The harder the better. I was fortunate to get a medical wooden shoe to wear during the sore and swollen time. You could call a medical supply store and see if they have anything like that? I broke my toe around 9 years ago, I don't know if they make anything like that anymore.

Elevate it when sitting and ice it. You should feel better in around a week or so. <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/3/3_2_1.gif' border=0></a>

Another little toe breaker here. I broke it a couple of days before my last day of jr high and couldn't wear a shoe on the last day; it was too swollen. My mom wouldn't take me to the dr, either; but then she didn't tape it up, either. Because some friends and I had already decided to dress crazy for the last day of school, everyone thought the missing shoe was a part of my 'outfit.'

I broke the three middle toes on my right foot in the pool at the Disneyland Hotel. I missed a flip turn, and cracked my foot on the side of the pool. The worst part was that it was the morning of my 3yr.old DD's first visit to Disneyland. DW suggested I stay in the room.....yeah, right.......and miss that day at the park? Not likely. So I taped them up, laced my Adidas up real tight and took it nice and easy. Nothing else you can do.
Good luck!

I've broken toes in the past. It hurts, but it does heal a little faster than you'd expect.

My sister, who's a nurse, told me to wear a shoe as soon as I could so that it would grow back straight. None of my toes are crooked, so maybe that helped.

I'm having a hard time wearing my shoe on that foot right now. I wore sneakers to class today, but had my shoe off most of the time.

But seriously, how long after you guys injured yourself were you able to wear a shoe comfortably? I have no idea what I'm going to do about tomorrow. I am expected to dress business causal, and have called my teacher. She said to try to at least wear slip on dress shoes, but I have no idea how she expects me to be on my feet in those! ick...maybe I should take a picture of my little toe so she can feel sorry for me!

Any suggestions and input about the length of time?

Man, it has been a long time since I did this, but I think I was hobbling on that wooden shoe I got for around 2- 3 weeks. Bet that is not what you wanted to hear, is it?
