Just trying to cover all my bases.. I am wondering if I need any documentation for my kids. I will be traveling solo with them, and yes I am divorced :( However, my ex and I get along quite well now. :D
Does anyone have the answer?
thanks!!!

Well, normally I'd say all they need is an original (printed by the state) birth certificate that has a raised seal.

But if you changed from your married name after the divorce, it's possible you might need a copy of the divorce decree showing that you have custody and maybe some sort of document and/or consent for you to take the kids out of the country.

But the FIRST thing I'd do is call DCL and ask them exactly what you need.

I am presently in Orlando, on the way through customs from Canada I was asked twice if I had a letter from my dd's father authorizing her to travel out of the country. (This even though she is on my passport.)They let me through after a few minutes of verifying my doc's. My advice, get a letter to be on the safe side..we are returning on the 26th, and I will be sure to have one...even though we weren't asked on January cruise.

Our adopted son is biracial and the customs officers ALWAYS give us a look over very critically when we present documents. Michael is always asked questions similiar to, "Who is this person with you?" and "What is her name?".

Once Michael asked the agent in St. Thomas, "Why do you want to know her name?" The agent explained that he was making sure that Michael was really our son, etc, and Michael with all the wisdom of a 7 year old looked at him and said, "Ohh, you don't have to worry about someone taking me. My Mom says that they'd bring me back FAST."

OOOOPPPSSS! But I did say it!

Rae,
That story about your son was a stitch! How funny is that! Kids just say it like it is, don't they???
Thanks for the laugh!

Ann - the best story is when we were in the cab in St. Marten and he asked why the people were so black. He kept saying, "Well, I'm black but they are black. Really, really, really black!"

We have friends of all races and for the life of me, I could never figure out why he kept going on and on and on about this but it was a little embarassing since the cab driver was native. I did my best to explain about the sun UV rays and equator but as only a 7 year old can...he kept repeating the same thing over and over and over.

Art Linkletter had it right when he said, "Kids say the darndest things!"

Is there any doubt now why I write comedies?! My life seems to be one big laugh after another - often to my own embarassment!

If I'm not mistaken you have to either have your divorce papers showing you have sole custody, or a notarized letter from your ex stating that it's OK to take the kids from the country. I want to think this is actually an governmental rule/law that was enacted to prevent non-custodial abduction.
