Breakage Question

Have a clarification question on breakage. From what I understood when a room was released (well reservation cancelled) within 60 days then the room could / would go into breakage -- which I thought was being available both on the cash side and on the points side at the same time. Is this correct?

I ask because we planned a last minute trip (really a week) and I've been seeing DVC rooms available on the cash side but they never show up on points. Would this be because they were originally cash reservations? I'm also wondering if when the system upgrades were done on DL / WDW / DVC a couple of weeks ago if something broke with breakage and being listed in both places.

Totally our fault for not planning earlier and we have a room at Pop Century, but it's frustrating seeing rooms at BCV, BWV, and SSR all pop open on the cash side.

By far, most of the rooms that end up in the cash inventory are from member trades (usually cruises). If cash rooms are breakage, MS can pull them back to DVC. AFAIK, breakage rooms don't appear in DVC inventory. Suggest you call periodically and ask CM to check for you. Good luck.

It won’t show on both. If it goes for breakage, then it’s no longer available for points bookings.

Sometimes MS can retrieve them but not very often or likely.

I think also they can forecast breakage? Which would add more complexity to seeing availability in real time.

Once the rooms have been pulled for a cash DVC member trip ( cruise, cash resort stay, concierge collection) , DVC has a bill fir those trips/booking that need to be paid with cash.
That is why they don't come back. History has shown that it will sell to someone.

I guess I was confused because when I asked a similar question about breakage last year I was told the general public competes against DVC for the rooms and the rooms were showing up as bookable by points. Here is the thread:

We compete in the sense that DVC decides if they want to leave them for points booking or offer for cash.

Rooms that are cash because people traded for cruises and other options never come back.

But, we agree as owners that all unreserved inventory can go to the cash side to create breakage income once at the 60 days mark.

At that point, it’s up to DVC whether or not to pull something back from cabs for an owner looking to stay but they are not required to do that.

I think when you are within a week of going, then you might have more success than if you are a month or two out.

Remember that at any given time, DVC owns more than 2% of all points at any given resort, and they can rent out those points for cash just like any other owner. That inventory of points that DVC owns is separate from breakage and also is separate from points used for cruises, cash resorts, concierge collection, and RCI/II deposits. So DVC rooms that are available for cash can come from a multitude of inventories, all under control of DVC.
