I had surgery in October and December... my dh is at the surgeons right now setting up surgery for him... and I'm pretty sure I need my other knee done too!:lmao: ANYWAY!

I'm out of work- dh will get paid when he is out BUT there will be NO overtime for him (obviously)... so we need to buckle down.

I went and bought "staples" at the grocery store, flour, sugar, yeast, baking soda, baking powder.. some canned goods etc. I plan on making our breads and meals and snacks from scratch. None of that prepared and expensive stuff.

I got several ideas from the crock pot thread.... :thumbsup2

What are some of your best bread recipes? I prefer to use the bread machine for the first part of the process.... I don't mind shaping and baking in the oven.

This is one of our favorites it makes a sweet bread. I have used it for cinnamon rolls before and they were perfect. You would need to half the recipe for the bread maker.

I have a few whole wheat recipes that I use. But I won't post because I am still searching for my favorite.

I use my Bread machine weekly and love it.
I went to the 2nd hand store and found plenty of used Bread machine
cook books that no one wants anymore because of the no carb diets.
You can even find the bread machine at a great price, my DH just got me
one for $5.00 and it looked like it had never been used--works great.
I am also determained that whenever summer gets here I am going to
make my on jams and jelly because of price and I want to control what
the ingrediants are (healthy).
Food is getting to be a real luxary.
Hope you feel better soon.

I've been baking our bread pretty frequently since getting the book "Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a Day." To find it, just Google "Artisan bread in 5 minutes recipe."

The recipe makes a dough that you refrigerate for a week or so and can just bake a loaf of it as you need it. The flavor is fantastic and gets even better as the dough sits. There are a number of "base" doughs you can make, but intructions for the most basic loaf can be found on the book's website. There's also a great youtube video on the method.

It's really simple...you stir together 13 cups flour, 6 cups water, 3 tbsp yeast and 3 tbsp salt, let it sit out for 2 hours and then stick in the fridge until you're ready to bake. On baking day, cut off what you need, shape, let rise and bake. Details can be found elsewhere. Makes 4 1 lb loaves of bread.

I use it to make naan, pita, dinner rolls, regular bread, cinnamon rolls, garlic bread, olive bread...
