BRCA1...anyone have this mutation?

I love Disney and plan two to three trips at a time. I found out on April 19 that I am BRCA1 positive. I knew I could be because my mom was, but somehow I wasn't expecting it.

I haven't had a mammogram in almost 2 years and I will be 49 in August. I am going to the screening centre for a mammo and consult on Thursday, plus I have an appointment with a gyn/oncologist to discuss my ovary removal.

I have three disney cruises in the works and I just feel depressed that I can't plan. My future seems so bleak and I'm worried I'm going to have to cancel my New York cruise this summer (July 20) because they will find something. I am unable to think or plan anything for it as I find myself crying and feeling I am unable to go.

Anyone else have this mutation? Are you able to continue planning vacations? Do you feel discouraged?

Any advice or encouragement will be helpful.

Thanks.

I think the gals on the Breast Cancer Survivors Thread on the Community Board could help you out.

They are very knowledgeable. Blessings to you.

Hi,
I don't have this mutation but my MIL and 4 SIL's do and for a long time it wreaked havoc on our family. (My DH tested negative for it.) All of them but 1 have had either ovarian, breast or fallopian tube cancer but all of them are SURVIVORS. The most important part is to be proactive with your health care because that is what will save your life IF you get cancer. I am sure you are scared but this mutation is not a death sentence and I'm sure you'll be heading to Disney many times.
Hang in there and keep those appointments. I am sure you will feel better once you know exactly how to make sure you are doing everything you can.

Julie

Thank you Julie. I have a mammo tomorrow at the high risk centre, an MRI in August and I see the oncologist on Friday about ovarian removal.

Its scary and feels like a death sentence, but I'm trying to stay proactive and optimistic and live the best I can.
