My DS11 got braces today and he is in horrible pain. Tylenol and Motrin are not helping. What did you do for your kids to help them manage the pain!??!?! I feel so badly for him. :sad1: How long does the severe pain/discomfort last??

The first few weeks were awful, and then anytime they get tightened they will hurt again. That I think was like once a month? I took tylenol. I did use Ambesol for the cuts. My mom used to tell me popsicles would numb the pain like an ice pack but I think that worked due to the placebo effect. lol. All the pain will be worth it in the end!

So I supose it aplays to men beaty is pain

Also for the upcoming visits have him take a pain reliever before the office visit.

How much are you giving him and how often?

Of course I didn't hear this piece of advice until after both DD's already had their braces on, but I think it's brilliant. Someone on here said a teething ring worked great. I still remember the pain I went thru from braces, and I would have tried anything to help the pain. People just don't realize how miserable it is for the first couple of weeks. Oh, and make sure he has plenty of wax on hand. That kinda helps with the sharpness of the metal until the inside of his mouth gets used to it.

 to him. It's no fun.

I have had mine one for a year and a half.
As time goes on they do not hurt as much, they hurt the most when you first get them on the first couple of times you get them tightened. Also if you have to wear rubber bands those will hurt like crazy at first.

I honestly found that cold things helped with the pain :goodvibes

Try the popsicle bit on him. Get sugar free. lol. At least it will be a distraction.

Ok, I just have to say NOT to get sugar free. Articicial sweeteners can trigger headaches and he doesn't need that. Also, no one should consume chemically made sweetners unless there is a medical need to do so-especially children.

cloth covered ice paks, lots of wire wax, call the doc and ask about what is the biggest dosage of ibuprofen he can take. My son was allowed a temporary large dosage for this type of pain.

When I look at my teeth now, I am so glad I`ve had them when I was 10. My kids do not need them for now but we will see...

OP, I hear ya!

DD11 just got braces yesterday too. At first, she was fine (and I forgot to give her some Motrin before the appt). We left the orthodontist at 3:30 and she didn't need any Motrin until about 6:00PM. She had mashed potatoes and ice cream for dinner and seemed ok...until 4:30AM when she woke me up. I gave her more Motrin, but it took a while for her to fall back to sleep. Maybe I should have woken her up at midnight and given her Motrin then.

She just got up and isn't feeling too great. She doesn't even want to go swimming with her friends today - and it's going to be in the 90's here!

Good luck. I hope your DS is feeling better soon! :goodvibes

DS usually has something warm like Hot Chocolate. He uses Orajel also.

Both of my sons are currently in braces, and thankfully have not had any pain issues.

In the pack of stuff to use with braces that they were both given, there was a piece of hard plastic that was kind of kidney bean shaped. They were instructed to bite on it if the pain got bad. Apparently the pressure of biting on this thing helps the pain.

My dd got braces this summer and was in a lot of pain. Make sure he checks his mouth for sharp wires. DD went back the next day b/c the braces had shifted a little and there was a sharp wire sticking into her cheek that was really painful.

My DD got braces in April and milkshakes really helped a lot, they filled her up when she couldn't chew and the cold helped the pain.

Thanks, same to your DD! He's doing MUCH better today. I went out this morning and got him some Anbesol and Orajel. We've used the Anbesol and that has really helped him.

He's eating a lot of yogurt and yesterday I made him two milkshakes. I'm sure he'll want some more of those today. ;) Last night he did manage to eat dinner which was stuffed shells. It was difficult but he persevered.

My DS doesn't want to go swimming today either and it's SUPER hot. So, we'll be staying inside, watching movies and spoiling him rotten!
