BP Oil? Ft Meyers ruin a vaca?

So we have a friend willing to give us their condo in the Ft. Meyers area free for a vacation.

We are planning to go, but everything we are planning is on the water. Are we even going to be able to swim? Beachcomb? Fish?

It will bust the budget to have to re-work everything and come up with non water related activities

Anyone know?

When are you planning on going down? Some oil has begun to wash up in Pensacola. We live about 200 miles from there and yes, we are preparing, but as of right now we can still have our water fun. I would say you will be just fine in Ft. Myers

I'm pretty sure Florida's tourism board has set up a website that is kind of an alert, gives forecasts, etc. of where the oil is, how the beaches are. You might want to do a search for that.

My family lives in Port Charlotte which is anbout 30 min south of Fort Myers and so far no oil there, hopefully it will stay that way.

Thank you for the info...like alot of other ppl, we cant reschedule this, but there are sooo many other things for us to do down there, but i would hate for it to be sidetracked because of this oil..

I live in Cape Coral right next to Fort Myers and there is NO oil here. No need to worry at all! The beaches are still beautiful.

In Florida, so far at least, as the oil comes in, they get it cleaned up pretty quickly and returned to normal.

It is breaking my heart that this is happening to one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world (not that it should happen anywhere).

NOAA's forecast report that came out yesterday said that it is unlikely for the oil to affect the west coast of Florida any further south than Tampa Bay. They do expect parts of the East Coast to get hit a bit, though -- that pesky Loop Current.
